Snob! No I don't, and I'm not. I loved Woolworth's over the years. It was cheap and cheerful, but have had some good bargains there. But maybe I am a rebel. I much prefer charity shops and £1 shops to those awful designer emporiums.

No i think it is a great shame. It has been around for a long time and lots of people were told just before CHristmas that they were losing their jobs. I feel sorry for them

Ello Guvna
Im never glad when thousands of people lose their jobs

Emily Hobhouse
I've heard this before - but they have the same brands as all other shops. They're no better or worse than any other high street shop. I'm convinced it's just snobbery.

Govt efforts should have been made to save it, and to save at least some of it - it's still not too late.

27,000 people on the dole. That's allot of benefits to pay out, sometimes it's best to keep a place going and inject a little Govt cash in like they have the banks and are going to for Jaguar and Land Rover - even though it's not even British owned.

Why do people think that if a store sells at a price affordable to the lower paid then it is bound to be cheap and nasty. I found many items at Woolworth that I could not obtain at other stores. I will miss it and so will a lot of people in my town.

Woolworth's died because it lost it's place in the market. There was a time when you could buy virtually anything in Woolworth's. It was cheap, it wasn't top quality, but it was functional. Also the layout of the shops (counters with a captive Saturday girl) meant that 14 year old boys could practise chatting to girls.

The latest incarnation of Woolworth's sold pick & mix sweets and children's clothes - both of which were cheaper in Tescos. They also sold CDs and DVDs but didn't have such a wide selection as Smith's or the specialised shops. There was also a small amount of hardware and homeware, but you couldn't be sure what they sold from one week to another, so they only got impulse sales.

The original purpose of Woolworth's has been taken over by the pound shops. The death of the chain is down to poor management and poor market placing. But never mind, find a source for their 39p smoked glass mugs and you can make a fortune selling them on eBay.

Didn't really like the shop (or the terrible music they played in-store) but after so long i guess it will be sad to see it close it's doors for the last time.

It would have been nice to stay. But they didn't keep up with the market. They turned into a Pound store found in the poorest areas.

starfox
I liked woolies, but it just couldn't compete with other shops partly because of it's image and the price and range of goods. You could get most of the things that they sold in woolies cheaper else where.

Yes. Precisely!!

I didn't go there much but it was still a shame that they went bust and so many people lost their jobs..

If Woolworths had been cheap it would probably have survived! But it lost it's way a good while back. Twenty years back woollies would have been the first port of call for anything household.
Wilkinsons have now filled that gap, and are thriving. Woolworths gave it away!
