It's not as simple as that. We have allowed so much manufacturing to be outsourced to countries (China) where people work for slave wages. They put up a few show factories that we can have a look at, and down the road a few km is another factory or two where laborers work for almost nothing and safety conditions are not observed. How can we compete with that? It's de facto protectionism on their part.
The car companies are getting the blame because they have been stupid in not anticipating the need for more fuel efficient vehicles. We allowed them to be stupid and greedy. Do you think they can compete with Honda and Toyota now? I have a Prius and I was told I'll be allowed to buy an after-market conversion for plug in in 2010. That means that Toyota is not researching a battery system. They must have it almost ready. If American car companies can ever compete again, we MUST help them now. Otherwise they will fade out of existence or will be forced to partner with one of the foreign companies.
The unions know they will have to take some steps back for a while. We really need to have American industry survive.... what is left of it. |

Good union stewards and officers know when to make concessions and when to comply with the contract to help the workers. Bad union officers will demand contract compliance, even if it means the loss of a company or an entire industry, not realizing the workers jobs go with it and so does their union. It isn't the unions that are bad or good - it's the people running it. |

They hurt the ability of business to create jobs. They encourage workers to spend more time thinking about breaks, then working. They are outdated and hurting this country. They need to change, and how business treats it people needs to change as well. Workers need to have ownership, with ownership will come renewed responsibility to service and produce better American made products. |

How can you answer if you have never been a union member? I currently am. Unions gave all Americans paid overtime, vacation pay, etc, etc. All these things were made possible years ago by labor unions. If you think the govt. should let the auto companies go bankrupt, then you have no idea how far down things will trickle. If a few million people lose their jobs, who is going to be buying cars, eating in restaraunts,paying for haircuts,etc.Also, just to let you know, of the price of a new car, labor costs are only 10%. Thats right, a 30,000 car would still cost 27,000 if the workers worked for nothing! |

Nope, unions are what can help the country.
The problem is the government importing goods that are made in other countries that don't have unions and can make the products cheaper.
Get smart America support youselves and buy American made products!
I would like to know why the government is allowing so many cheap imports all the time, they are only ruining the US. |

In general, unions hurt the nation. Especially the UAW. Their president feels the union has a right to be involved and have a say in how the business is runned. They are at the root of all the problems that's hurting the automakers.
I personally hope that all 3 automakers go under just to get rid of the unions. |

One word C.W. hurt and hurt bad. I remember a long time ago being in the AFL-CIO Paper printing and Specialties Union and after 5 years at that job, the union had a strike, we had no job and no strike fund, and the strike lasted one year, I think now the plant it's closed. I found right after that a non union job that paid all teamster benefits but we were non union. The money was excellent. |
