Techno | Do you think the public library is doing the right thing? |
I came to this local library to donate some of my used science college text books because I want to do the good thing by contributing back to the community. I thought they would put my books back on the shelves, so everyone can access and share the books. Instead of doing of what I thought they were supposed to be doing, they took my books and sell them back to the patrons (customers) at the lower prices. I was very disappointed and angry by their selfish acts. It's worst enough that they charge the patrons $25 U.S.D for monthly membership fee and everything in that library is expensive, 75 cents for a copy, and some hundred dollars fee for children's Summer Reading Camp. I thought library is supposed to be a friendly, educational atmosphere and NOT a business or marketing places to gain profits from people. Am I right or am I wrong? Please share with me your opinions. You don't necessarily have to agree of what I've just said, but please do provide your feedbacks on either way. Additional Details Thank you all ladies & gentlemen, brothers & sisters for sharing your feedbacks and supports.
I probably WILL NEVER donate anything to the public library again! I will take some of your honest, decent advices by donate those books to the high schools where all of the children can enjoy and have more advantage in learning without worrying not having in enough text books. It may not be much from my part but I think at least the thought is counted.
God bless you all! Peace! |

I know this is disturbing to you but -- once you donated the books the library was free to do with them whatever they wished. If you give something away you also give away all control over it |

Umm.. in most cases, you don't pay for a Public library (unless you're going to a library other than the one your city/township/whatever runs or has affiliation with) Donations like yours are sold back to the public as part of fund raisers.
Also, college text books are essentially worthless outside of the college they're in. I used to buy my text books used, and then try to return them for credit and be told "sorry, the next edition is out".
In any case, i work for a Public Library. We're holding a large Book Sale this weekend. The proceeds of which are normally used to fund Summer reading programs for children in the community. What exactly is wrong with that? |

if its gov't owned then something's very wrong but if its privatley owned then you should probably find another library or live with it. |

It could be that the library is short of funding and needs to raise money. Unfortunately, many of our libraries are underfunded and are in danger of having to close their doors because of it. While a library is not a business, they do have operating expenses such as paying employees, utility bills, etc. So by selling your donated books to raise cash, the library is contributing to the community by keeping its doors open and the lights on. Our local library does the same thing. If a donated book already exists in their library, they will sell it to patrons to raise money to pay other expenses. |

My daughter took my grandson to the public library that we always went to and there were just computers everywhere. So she asks the librarian where the children's books were. They tell her that the books are online and you just download them. Now tell me, how do you download a book to read to your child at bedtime? |

It's a bad thing to do I would say.. Libraries should have books that they RENT so EVERYONE can read them.
Of corse, if they had copies of those books, then it wont be too bad to sell them. but still. |

25 !? When I got my library membership it was just 10 dollars and that was it. Maybe they need more money, it seems like it 2 me... |

wow that's crazy and I agree.. totally wrong
I think our library is free.. I don't know if you have to pay a one-time fee for membership or not.. you have to pay if you lose a book, bring it back late, or if you lose the card
what you did was a really nice thing though, and a good idea. |

75 cents a copy where do you live? where i live is 10 cents. and most books you can borrow for for free. also you only pay 3 dollars for membership cards thats all. do you live in a high marketing place? i don't really agree with what your library is doing. its awful! i agree with you. |
