The rule used to be six months, after which time it was considered stale.
I'm not sure that this is backed by legislation (Bills of Exchange Act 1882) or if it is just considered good practise in the banking sector.

6 months - but try to pay in in anyway - have done so before with cheques "past their sell by date" but they were with paid in with some others still in date and no problem!! (have done it twice!)

I'm not sure but my girlfriend's grandfather passed away a few months ago and we've been cleaning out all of his stuff and we found twenty $20 travelers checks, they were dated back to 1996 ... We didn't know if they were still any good but we have a family friend that works at a local bank so we asked her about it ... Well, we ended up comin home with an extra $400 =)

general practice is 6 months from the date of issue, however in business situations taking into account your cash flow etc you can specify in your contracts a paticular time element when it comes to cheque payments / receipts

Most checks are vaild for one year. Exceptions can be made check with the bank directly to be sure

Not particularly sure about Nat West in particular but as I understood it (and i'm an accountant so deal with things like this all the time) all cheques are valid for 6 months from date on the cheque. However, due to inefficient bank clerks some do slip through later than that.

I think you can cash it for 6 months after the date
