Does baptism take away sin?

shojo
No, baptism does not take away sin. Only faith in Jesus Christ and repentance can take away sin. You accept Christ as your Savior, and He wipes your slate clean. Baptism is an outward expression of an inward change. However, once your sins are wiped away, don't think you can go do whatever you want and be ok. You must repent, which means to turn away from your sin. You will still sin, we all do, but you can repent daily.

You should never just absolve yourself of wrong doings. Taking religion into your heart should teach you to make up for those ill-deeds. It doesn't matter if you become religious or atheist, you should still strive to be a good person!

DrK
Martin Luthers (the beginning of the Lutheran Church) thoughts on this were:
2. Luther & Baptismal Regeneration -- (Note specifically: II.)

The Sacrament of Holy Baptism: The Simple Way a Father Should Present it to His Household.

I. Q. What is Baptism?
A. Baptism is not just plain water, but it is water contained within God's command and united with God's Word.

II. Q. What does Baptism give? What good is it?
A. It gives the forgiveness of sins, redeems from death and the Devil, gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, just as God's words and promises declare. (Emphasis added.)

Q. What are these words and promises of God?
A. Our Lord Christ spoke one of them in the last chapter of Mark: "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; but whoever does not believe will be damned."

III. Q. How can water do such great things?
A. Water doesn't make these things happen, of course. It is God's Word, which is with and in the water. Because, without God's Word, the water is plain water and not baptism. But with God's Word it is a Baptism, a grace-filled water of life, a bath of a new birth in the Holy Spirit, as St. Paul said to Titus in the third chapter: "Through this bath of rebirth and renewal of the Holy Spirit, which He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ, our Savior, that we, justified by the same grace are made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a faithful saying." (Emphasis added.)

IV. Q. What is the meaning of such a water Baptism?
A. It means that the old Adam in us should be drowned by daily sorrow and repentance, and die with all sins and evil lusts, and, in turn, a new person daily come forth and rise from death again. He will live forever before God in righteousness and purity.

Q. Where is this written?
A. St. Paul says to the Romans in chapter six: "We are buried with Christ through Baptism into death, so that, in the same way Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, thus also must we walk in a new life."

Is not this gospel of "baptism for salvation" another gospel? (cf. Gal. 1:6-9). Numbers III. & IV. above also touch on the "sacramentalism" aspect of baptism, again, much like the Roman Catholic sacraments. (See Endnote detailing Luther's teachings on baptism from his Bible commentaries.)

John Calvin the instigator of the Baptist Reformation thought:
Calvin saw baptism as an initiation into the body of Christ through which Christians receive forgiveness, the mortification of sin, and communion with Christ.

John Wesley(the father of Methodism) thought:
Wesley regarded baptism as a means of grace obligatory upon all Christians, as Jesus himself showed by example. 3 Baptism according to Wesley, is included in the whole design of Christ's great commission, and it must, therefore, remain in Christ's church until the end of the world. 4

Wesley believed that baptism, as an initiatory sacrament, is in the ordinary way "the only means of entering into the Church or into heaven. "5 That is to say, Wesley believed that the free gift and merit of the atonement is applied to men in baptism, 6 through the work of the Holy Spirit. As to the benefits of baptism, he said that through baptism we are engrafted into Christ the Word, that is, into the new covenant of God, being admitted into the Body of Christ. 7 Also, the guilt of original sin is washed away from us, by the application of the merits of Christ's death. 8 He further says that through baptism we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, 9 through whom we begin a new life and grow throughout Christian life to maturity. These benefits, moreover, may be expressed in the words, "baptismal regeneration. " He writes,

By water then as a mean, the water of baptism, we are regenerated or born again: Whence it is also called by the Apostle; 'the washing of regeneration.'10

babtism does not take away sin. god does. he does this through the power of jesus dying for you on the cross. this is not saying you will not sin again cuz we are all weak. if you feel guilty for things you have done you can call on the holy spirit to come and make you all clean and brand new again. babtism is a symbol of the holy spirit comming down to wash you and make you clean.but you must believe these things and want them and ask god for them and believe that jesus came here for you because god loved you so much.. questions? dwalker4293@charter.net babtism is a public display of what god has already done inside you, so that people will know you are holy and try to help you stay clean by getting on you when you sin.

That's what they say.

YA is a sham
Only that we are born in sin. Babies do not know yet how to sin so it is their forgiveness, adult baptism is an affirmation of following Jesus and believing in him forgives you of sin.

sir_jeffrey
if my memory serves me well... catholics practice the baptism ritual to first, get rid of your original sin and to welcome the person to the christian world...

No. Baptism is a symbolic act which demonstrates the washing away of sin, which happens when you become a believer.

It is a public way of showing/affirming your faith. Hence the Bible tells you to 'repent' (sins washed away) 'and be baptised' (show people that has taken place)

yes, sprinkiling water on your forehead will rid you of all your sins...right....

Livin and Lovin Life!!!
well, let's see. if u believe that it can, it will. trust your god, have faith. originaly it takes away natural sins (about 1/2) So it's up to you what you do with the other 1/2. Why r u asking us God is who you got baptized for(and yourself) so ask him( and yourself).

I believe that it's a symbol showing the individual's commitment to Christ and Christ's death and resurrection. It's not the water that takes away sin, but what it symbolizes.

No! Humans are sinners.

1. To become a friend of God, you must obtain a good knowledge of Bible truth (1 Timothy 2:3, 4), put faith in the things you have learned (Hebrews 11:6), repent of your sins (Acts 17:30, 31), and turn around in your course of life. (Acts 3:19) Then your love for God should move you to dedicate yourself to him. This means that in a personal, private prayer you tell him that you are giving yourself to him to do his will.—Matthew 16:24; 22:37.

2. After you have made your dedication to God, you should be baptized. (Matthew 28:19, 20) Baptism lets everyone know that you have dedicated yourself to Jehovah God. So baptism is only for those who are old enough to make a decision to serve God. When a person is baptized, his whole body should be put under the water momentarily.—Mark 1:9, 10; Acts 8:36.

it takes away original sin. You have to go to confession to get rid of your other sins

No, asking God to forgive you of your sins does. Baptism is a visible demontration of being reborn as a christian. You are "washing" away your old life. If it did, we would be getting baptised on a regular basis.

Baptism in the outward showing of an inward change. It is commanded in Acts that for salvation we must believe and be baptized. If we believe that Christ is the Son of God and that He died and rose again for our sins then we ought to be baptized. Baptism is the symbol of our rebirth as Christians. When we are placed under the water it is like our "death" to the world and when we are brought back up it is like our rebirth as new creatures free of sin and filled with the Holy Spirit as long as we receive and accept that gift. So in answer to your question "does baptism take away sin?" no, not in and of itself but through Christ baptism washes that sin away.

crushthem2004
no but ask God for forgivenes every day and have a speacial relation ship with christ
