Yes, when the package can't fit the mailbox the mailman always comes up to my door and either leaves it there or knocks on the door and delivers to me in person. Sometimes if they consider it necessary they will leave a authorized note for you to take it to an USPS station and pick up your package there.

If they require a signature, they will leave a little paper saying a what time they will come back the next day... if they not require signature they will leave it at your door.
Be careful to be there because at the third attempt, they will send the package to the main office and after 7 days, back to where it came from... good luck!
