In a capitalist society, businesses ought to bow to the demands of the consumer. If consumers accept less than acceptable service and products, then they only have themselves to blame. Maybe Brits have some subconscious guilt about having colonized most of the world and feel waiting in queues is their cross to bear. |

I think its a combination of things. Generally, Brits are reserved and hence not good at communication of any kind. We don't like to be seen to "lose our cool" so don't complain. We are only just beginning to get used to the "compensation culture", up until recently, taking someone to court was costly and a waste of time. Most of us hate our jobs, so we don't perform them well. We work all week just to survive and pay the bills while our government comes up with even more madcap schemes to fleece our pockets. The cost of living slowly spirals out of control so we have a culture that is slowly turning to alcohol and drugs because they're as miserable as hell (causing more depression). Our weather sucks 98% of the time, so half of us suffer from SAD and when we have a heatwave we have other crap to deal with (power cuts, water shortages). I could go on, but, I think you get the generally idea. In short, apathy!!! |

Generally the service staff in the U.K. are more polite and often on the job much longer that the American (USA) counterpart. Staff turnover is much higher in the USA, and in many places a big, growing problem. By "we" are you referring to the Brits ? In North America they are the biggest complainers, by far.
The best place for customer relations is Mexico, people there are often in the same job, life long. And Mexicanos , in Mexico, would meet and excede your standards. |

Ok, first off, I'm an American. Most of the misspelling you're talking about is from Yahoo! questions I'm assuming? It's probably all the young teens that are bored on summer break making us look bad.
I'll admit, we as Americans can be demanding. I think it is because we are used to things being done both quickly, and properly. However, come to California where you can't even order McDonalds half the time because all the wokers speak Spanish, and you will see that we can be patient when we are forced to be.
Really, i just think that Americans set a higher standard because it's what we're used to, but it would be nice if some people in this country were a little more patient.
(sorry, I know I'm not "older and wiser" but I'm kind an expert in the field because I'm a rare, patient, kind, non-litigation seeking kind of American gal.) |

What century are you living in....American's now say 'have a great day', the previous term 'nice day' is so last century
You are right though, American's are pastmasters or legendary when it comes to customer service and customer care
Might have something to do with the fact that American's have a slightly different work ethic/attitude or mentality |

There's a saying in America, "The customer is always right. "
That is why customer satisfaction is extremely important to the American merchant. So, business owners really strive to make their customers happy. The consumers realize that, so when they feel that they aren't being valued, they know their complaint actually means something.
As far as the "have a nice day," That's pretty sincere. Americans are a pretty friendly group of people. |
