As long as they tell the truth, and don't intentionally badger people, then it's ethical...of course whether it's pleasant or effective, that's another question entirely. It's like being a meter maid who writes parking tickets - and unpleasant job, but necessary for those who can stoach it.

There is nothing un ethical in direct marketing.
Also there is nothing new about it .
As long as the customer's do not get the impression that they are unnecessarily being harassed in the name of direct marketing all is fair in love and war and direct marketing.
Coming to the existence of this system in the earlier days one clear example is bangle sellers and Saree sellers who used to visit each and every house hold in each and every villages.
If this is not direct marketing then what else?
