31 “Moreover it was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 However, I say to YOU that everyone divorcing his wife, except on account of fornication, makes her a subject for adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
So, the only scriptural grounds is infidelity. |

Huh? Are you one of the religious freaks that hangs around here?
I guess the reason [insert name of appropriate power, I would say The Legal System] allows divorce is to lower the murder and unhappiness rate. |

The Bible teaches us that we are not to get divorced. In Matthew 5:32 Jesus teaches about divorce:
"But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery." (NLT)
It refers to divorced women. But don't think that just because this specific verse only mentions women that it only applies to women. It applies equally to both men and women.
There are some circumstances in which divorce is allowed. In this verse we see that divorce is allowed, if your partner has committed adultery (with a physical relationship).
1 Corinthians chapter 7 teaches us more about marriage, about staying single, and about divorce.
Concerning divorce 1 Corinthians 10-11 says: "Now, for those who are married I have a command that comes not from me, but from the Lord. A wife must not leave her husband. But if she does leave him, let her remain single or else go back to him. And the husband must not leave his wife." (NLT)
Reading a little further we see the only other circumstance in which divorce is acceptable is when a non-Christian spouse leaves (1 Corinthians 7:10-16) the marriage. Many people interpret the reference to a non-Christian leaving a marriage to include abuse--and I agree with that interpretation. Someone who is abusing their spouse is not a Christian, and--although they are present physically--they have left the marriage. If you are being abused by your spouse, get out, get away, and get a divorce. |

Last time I checked it wasn't God's decision. |

God has nothing to do with it. It's a question for your feelings in the matter, your own intelligence, and the law. Life isn't a waiting room, or rehearsal. However painful it may be, confronting reality always minimises the eventual pain all round. |

But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress |
