according to the Merriam-Webster OnLine Dictionary (found at http://www.m-w.com) there are four possible meanings:
1) as an interjunction, it is "used especially to express joy or surprise." being three ha's, it would mean three expressions of joy or surprise. moreover, since three is sometimes used to signify completion, perfection, totality, or an absolute, than the ha's can be said to signify a complete, perfect, total, or absolute expression of joy or surprise.
2) it is an abbreviation for "hectare," which in turn is a metric unit that equals a million square meters or appromixately 328.08 square miles in the U.S. equivalent).
as it is three hectares, it would be three million square meters or appromoixately 984.24 square miles in the U.S. equivalent.
3) it is an abbreviation for "hour angle" (the abbreviation is usually capitialized, i.e., HA, but in this case it is not capitialized yet still keeps the significene of the said abbreviation), which in turn is "the angle between the celestial meridian of an observer and the hour circle of a celestial object measured westward from the meridian".
4) it can consist of a ha and a ha-ha (a ha-ha can be either an expression of amusement or derision as an interjection or, as a noun, a sunk fence, which in turn is "a ditch with a retaining wall used to divide lands without defacing a landscape"). the missing of the slash between the two ha's for ha-ha dose not make the word ha-ha have no signifience. |
