When I lived in Destin, FL for five years, which is considered as lower Alabama. There are still the southern ways in speech. When you answer an unknown name female of any age........it is "Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am, Thank you Ma'am."
If you know the name, whether they are married or single, young or old, you address them by "Miss, their name."
I have been gone now for 3 years back to the west coast......and I still say Ma'am a lot.........but not as much.....as people here consider it rude. |

yes many times. i was probably in my early thirties the first time. it was kind of traumatic but i got over it. |

I was 12 or something (looked like a faaaat 15 year old), at any shop or boutique or restaurant, and it became pretty common since that age, since these people in the service sector prolly thought and still think I'm old enough to have a credit card with balance on it, lol :p |
