I received a check saying that I had an energy savings grant of $4,925.20 from a grant amount of $38,000.00.The check for 4,925.20 is to pay the necessary fees to received the final amount. Isn't it funny that they sen't me a check to cash, and they wan't for me to send them a payment to cover the fees and taxes? Should I be alarmed? The check is from a third party Leisters Furniture, apparently from a mass donors lists that cosists of the gap, blockbuster,walmart, and other huge companies. I'm suppose to call a claims manager before I cash their check.

SCAM SCAM SCAM -- some variation of this scam has the check coming from Bed Bath and Beyond.

Yes, you should be alarmed. I suggest you ignore that, throw that check in the trash and never think of it again. Grants are NOT given that way.
Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.
For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document - you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant.
There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and this grant review committee will evaluate the merits of each proposal. Only those that they feel exemplifies the objective of the grant will be approved.
You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.
Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.
Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.
Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs |

Got this in the mail today. Called the number and the recording came on that all reps were busy. I took it to the bank and they would not do anything with it. I was pretty sure that it was not real, but I wanted to see anyway. The bank suggested that I go to th police with the check. |

sounds like a scam to me. this company is asking you to cash the check and send them the fees. if it was legit you would not have to send in anything and all fees would be taken out of your 38000 dollar check. i am afraid it is bogus. |

This is a scam I have contacted a furniture company that sells this Leister Furniture who in turn contacted them. They called me back immediately and told me that this is a scam and the police will be contacting me shortly. Do not try to cash that check or send these vultures anything. |

Hi I received 1 too, I went to my bank and they are varifing for me the legitimacy of this so called grant. I did call the claim number and was not inpressed, he kept saying I was 1 of 125 picked randomly for this and not to share personal info. My bank will call me tomorrow with the results. |

I received the same bullshit ******* check. I actually spoke to a Sophia Mcgee (after calling since 8:50 am today and even if she's really an actual person) who "so-called" activated my account so I could cash the check (I was choosing to select option A) and pay the taxes and applicable fees. She activated my account and gave me the address of where I needed to send the taxes and fees payment (in Ontario, CA) and told me that I was cleared to cash the check. That ***** even said Congratulations and that she was entering my name in more chances to win another grant. So as excited as I was, I went to M& T Bank (where the check displayed), they confirmed that the check was a fraudelent check. As a result, both the check and awards letter was confiscated. My name was recorded with the bank for investigation purposes, was asked to submit a formal police report, and was assisted out of the bank by the bank security. Guys, unfortunately, sad to admit myself (b/c I needed this money sooooooo bad, it was thekind of money that was going to save my life) but THIS CHECK IS BULLSHIT AND IM PISSED I WAS BAMBOOZED, ROPA-DOPED, HAD THE WOOL PULLED OVER MY EYES!!!!. PLEASE!!!! DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!! IT'S A SCAM!!! I am going to file a law suit against the company. |

I just received the same check and letter. I called the bank to verify the check it came back as being valid for the right amount. The information of the Leisters Furniture is incorrect...as if it was jumbled up a few different addresses together. I am going to attempt to contact these people. If it in fact turns out to be a fraud I will post again. |

i received the same bullshit letter and check and i did some research and saw that it was most likely a scam so i thought id go to the local M&TBank (which is the same bank as on the front of the check i got) and try to scam the scamers by cashing the check and keeping the money but when i got there they examined the check and determined it was a counterfeit check. this is a complete scam designed to get you to call the company that sent the check and give them your banking info so that they can then take the Fees and Taxes you read about directly out of your account as well as all your other money. report it to the authorities. these people need to go to jail |
