Focus on something else. Over a month, you might save yourself about 3 dollars of electricity. Computers don't need much, especially since the monitors turn themselves off after a period of disuse. |

just found this.....
ENVIRONMENT CHAMPION
I work for the Co-op Insurance Society in an office in Leeds. In the summer of 2003, our office contained about 50 networked PCs and they were always left on 24 hours a day. As part of a company-wide project, I became 'The Environmental Champion' for our office. We did an energy audit on our site and the 50 PCs all had big 19in or 21in monitors. These each used about 300W when turned on and 150W in standby mode. Our annual energy consumption for the computers was about 85,000kWh.
By changing our working practices, we saved 47,000kWh (about £2,300 per year). This was achieved by simply switching off machines when they weren't in use. We also switch off our energy-guzzling monitors when we go for lunch. I'm told this is saving about 20 tons of CO2 emissions - the equivalent weight of 3.8 elephants! Another knock-on saving was a reduced air-conditioning bill due to the reduction in heat being generated.

The fact that you're even asking the question shows that you know money is being wasted.
It's not a question of "how much." Any waste is exactly that....A waste! |

THAT WOULDN'T SAVE ANYBODY MONEY.
"standby power waste" is a myth; the power doesn't disappear, it's converted into heat. Presuming your company doesn't have an open-air office, most of the heat will stay there until the morning, saving on heating bills. If there's anyone in the office overnight (as there are at many telcos) and they leave the heating on, then the amount of electricity used will be identical wether you leave the pc's on or not, to keep the temperature constant.
As a better, less eco-nutterish idea, have a close look at their CRM system, see if there are any inefficiencies, anything that wastes time for anyone. They really like that sort of stuff. |

First of all take a look at the expense side of your p & l (profit and loss report. Find an expense that you can cut back on - usually salesman expenses are outrageous - office supplies can also cause a dent in the pocket - have you tried negotiating prices on your purchases.
sales - do some cold calling - spend the money for a dynomite website- purchase email addresses |

It would save your company money in electricity, and in fraud costs! If the employees in your company aren't turning off their computers when they leave at night, they run the risk of having people (other staff staying later, cleaning crews, etc.) tapping into confidential information on the terminals. Our company has a policy that we have to logoff and turn off our computers as soon as we leave.
On top of that, you'll be helping the environment. CO2 gases are emitted through electricity use, even if the unit is idle. |

You would save them a lot of money if you left. Do you think they are trying to tell you this in a roundabout way? |

That would save a little; depends on your utility rates.
Try turning the hot water off in the bathrooms at night. |

Quite a bit of energy, plus wear and tear on the computers. Also you need to set every monitor to energy saver mode, when not in use for say 20 minutes, to reduce energy consumption, not all monitors shut themselves off, they have to be set that way.
From a quick search on the web on computer energy use:
If you're a Windows user (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me), just set up your PC to "hibernate" overnight. "Hibernate" powers down your monitor to about 5 watts of energy and your PC to 2.3 watts -- virtually the same as turning your PC off (your monitor uses zero watts when turned off; more on this below). Either way, you save as much as $90 a year in power costs compared to a PC left on with a 3D screen saver running.
200 x $90 = $18,000; not bad savings for a simple procedure. |

If your computers are on standy douring the night, they aren't using much electricity, but still you will save some and help the environment. Some further ideas which might help:
- In Austria, we do not turn on the lights in a room during the day if there is enough sunlight from the window to see just fine.
-Naturally make sure the lights are off at night.
-Check to see if you can get more energy conserving lightbulbs, but be sure the extra price is made up in energy savings.
-Don't use as much heating/cooling, turn it off at night
-in general request information about your major cost centers, probably there is a lot of unnecessary waste when you research it |
