They make our merchandise, they process our food, they synthesize our medications, they even own a significant part of our businesses (stocks, bonds…etc.). Have we become their slaves much like an inexperienced college student becomes a slave to a high interest credit card? |

This is an interesting question, and the answer to it is yes. We depend on China for our merchandise and without it we would suffer. In a sense China is a monopoly on all of our imports. A parallel to this would be oil from the Middle East, and take a look back at the Iranian Oil Crisis, which was solely caused due to our dependence on the Middle East for oil. If China becomes powerful, which seems inevitable, they can easily abuse our dependence on them. |

i think you are only a slave if you entirely submit yourself to a level above you. in this case, i wouldn't say that we have 'become slaves' to China because we don't entirely believe in their abilities. i will only talk from my point of view, and my experience. i have just returned from China. i stayed there for a month. China itself, is a whole other world that many people have not yet discovered. i don't believe that China needs our help in making them 'masters of the industry'. they are independent and can live supporting themselves. therefore, China does not need us as slaves, but if we are surrendering to China as slaves, then we are the ones in doubt of our abilities in becoming masters. |

No we have not.
The Japanese own more US assets than the Chinese. EU owns more than either. They don't own a majority in any stocks or bonds and would have no effect on our business. If they all took their money out it would affect our economy however it would be more than stupid on China's part to do that and frankly the US government could step in an seize the assets.
China makes items that require very little skill and technology. Everything they produce can be setup in half a dozen third world countries. IF China magically pulled the plug than business would simply move to Africa, other Asian countries and in South America. If worst gets to worst we could move it to the United States where costs would go up but it would take only a couple of weeks to setup a few factories. Stockpiles along would last over a year and in that time we would shift it to another country EASILY.
China is more reliant than we are. Where the US and other countries could easily find other countries to produce our goods and it might only mean slight increases in costs China would lose millions of jobs. 10s of millions of people would be out of work. Other foreign companies would start pulling investment out of China. It would destroy their economy.
In any case China not only could but would never threaten the US or take advantage of it. It would not only devastate their economy, a lot more than it would the US, but it would destroy their reputation on the world stage.
BTW most our food and medication doesn't come from China. IN fact China has to import rice, soybeans (where they get a lot from the US) and other foot items to feed a huge population that is losing farmable land. |
