I haven't rented a car from them since May, and today is October 21st! My online statement says that there was a $75 charge (a card transaction) from Budget rent a car initiated on 10/18 @ 4:46am and it posted to my account on 10/19. I'm freaking out! How can I find out who has done this? I have my Visa debit card, so I know it isn't missing or stolen. Am I going to be liable for this?? I'm so worried because that $75 was my bill money and I need it! I don't know what to do and the bank is closed and customer service at Budget isn't open til tomorrow! Has this happened to anyone else? What are my rights? Does this mean that someone has stolen my identity? Or my card number? What should I do?

I just spoke with my bank and they canceled my debit card and are issuing a new card. They filed some papers to dispute the charge. They said they will do the investigation and I will have a credit back to my account within the week. Apparently the charge originated in Virginia, I live in Michigan. And they said since I've had a new card issued since my last transaction with Budget in May, there was no way they could be charging me for something unless they had my new card number (I got the card in August). thanks for all the answers! I feel better, but still wondering how someone got my number, and if I'm going to be liable if they rented a car and any damages or if it gets stolen?? Any ideas? |

Call budget first thing monday morning. Then go to your bank and talk to them.
Could be a mistake, or a charge is just now showing up on your account. They might have forgotten to charge you for some damage or overage. Or the manager might be having a slow week so he is charging some old customers and see who notices... if you don't say anything... he will charge you again in a month or so.
Best case senario, if it is a mistake and you get it back asap... this could take a week or two to get back into your account. |

First, thank God its only this bad and not any more.Call the Budget people, then inform the bank. Note down time of call and who you spoke with.Wait until your next statement and cofirm that the charge has been cancelled or the amount credited to your account. Pls donot give up until you see justice done.!
Just a couple of days back my visa called and wondered if I charged an exhorbitant amount on fri am from a Canon store?? and a few other hefty charges.I denied the charges.My card all the time was with me.Apparently, a disgruntled employee at one of the stores I used the card could have abused my confidential information.But all is sorted now...So always be aware and watch out..and never ever quit until u get justice.Good luck! |

Calm down. Unless you have an online banking telephone number, which you should, there is nothing you can do until tomorrow. Check the website for 24 hour telephone numbers. You can also, usually, email the bank about the charge.
Your Visa check card protects you against unauthorized charges and the bank will reverse any overdraft fees as well.
Tomorrow morning call your bank. They will be able to address this through customer service. They will also be able to determine if the charge was from the transaction in May, or just somehow duplicated in the last couple of days.

You might want to get this done. Go to the police, tell them you would like to file a police report. Then take a copy to your bank, fill out any dispute forms you need. Then take another copy to budget car rental. Keep a copy for your own records. Do not give them your new number. This way you will not be blacklisted from budget or other car rentals. |

Call the 800-number for your bank....tell them what you told us and that you want to dispute the charges.
They will deal with Budget and if the charge is indeed faulty, they will return your money into the account.
This will come as no cost to you for the investigation.
The numbers are usually open 24 hours so call them NOW.. The longer you wait, the more it will look like you did buy something and are trying to cover it up.
It usually takes only 24-48 hours to get this resolved. |

Don't panic just yet. Call Budget and find out why they charged you. Maybe they hadn't initially charged you, caught it, and they are charging now. Check your May statement before you call. This has happened to me before. It was worst. It was almost $700. They used an old authorization code and had the charges placed on a reissued credit card that had not even been activated. If these charges are unauthorized, contact you card holder. They will investigate the situation. Depending on the company, you shouldn't have to make a payment on that amount until the investigation has been conducted.They can have Budget reverse the charges if they need to. If it's identity theft, you will have to contact your card holder to see how they cover you in this type of situation. Good luck. Hopefully it was just a company error. |

They will do an investigation (call them) and figure it out. Once we had someone deduct money and we couldnt figure out who it was. It turned out it was our apartment (we had just moved in and it was taking a deposit out) but they used a different company to do the financial stuff. They will help you find out what is going on. |

It sounds like Budget might have charged you for something that was either done to the car or something that was missed in May. Depending on your contract that you signed with budget, you might be responsible for this charge. However, you really need to call Budget first. Since they initiated the charge, your bank needs to know the details of the transaction before they can move forward. If the charges were not authorized, then you need to go into a branch of your bank and start the paperwork. It doesn't sound like identity theft, but you might be in for a little work with this situation. If it makes you feel more secure, you can always close your account and open a new one with a new card. I always put charges like that one on a credit card instead of my debit card. That way if something like this happens, it doesn't infringe upon my bill money.
So, call Budget tomorrow and then visit your bank. Good luck with it. |
