I've no investing experience (to be proud of)...
But, I'd use the capital to approach the bank, and gain quite a bit more money, then I'd choose a plot of land (preferably with a run down building on it), and build a nice new block of apartments on it.
For the kind of apartment quality I'm thinking of, it would clearly cost more than 500k GBP, so I might even live in one of them (but I have a nice house already) and be a live-in landlord.
Watch the money roll in.
You could dump the Ferrari on the tax man, along with the fuel costs.
Plus, if you build the apartments in a city you really like, you could even expense the air-fare to and fro....making an ideal get-away.
So as you can see, an amount of money such as that is an opportunity to set-up for the future.
Splashing it out on a house of your own, will only cost you, not provide any additional income.
