Hiccups are gulping sounds caused by involuntary spasms of the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscle that separates the chest and abdomen and helps with breathing. Hiccups can be triggered if you eat too much or too fast, consume very hot or cold foods and beverages, or drink carbonated beverages. Other causes include cold showers, entering or leaving a hot or cold room, sudden excitement, and stress.
Hiccups are not a serious medical condition and usually disappear on their own within a few minutes. If they last longer than 24 hours, hiccups may be a sign of another condition or injury. You should see your health care provider if you experience prolonged hiccuping.
Home remedies are usually the primary treatment for hiccups, although no one is really sure how well they work. Hiccup home remedies include sneezing, being suddenly frightened, holding your breath, gargling, drinking pineapple juice, drinking water rapidly, sipping ice water, or swallowing dry granulated sugar. These activities may help by altering breathing patterns. |

Hold your breath, or try drinking small sips of water, one after the other consistently until they stop. -LMAO @ Demanda's response |

if you are asking how to get rid of hiccups, just drink plenty of water - not carbonated water or softdrinks |

This may sound strange but it works for me and my kids. It was taught to me by my Aleut mother and from her mother. Somthing of my native culture that was passed on down from my family.
One teaspoon of sugar and a short glass of water. Take the spoon of dry sugar, place the spoon of sugar in your mouth and swallow with water. Finish the glass of water and that should stop the hiccups. |

A spoonful of sugar usually does the trick. Breathing in a paper bag, or drinking water upside down also may work. |

drink from your glass upside down. I dunno how to explain it in english, but use your jaw, not your upper lip. That works, absolutely. |

allright, my g/f gets crazy hiccups. The only thing that will semi consistently work is this:
-I stand behind her holding her ears, at a steady pressure.
-She then takes a deep breath in.
-She holds her nostrils shut, and shuts her eyes.
After that she takes a few sips of water and holds her breath. |

help me!!

Relax yourself. Close your eyes. Breath slowly. Imagine calming down your musceles and a flap on your stomach being relaxed and not hiccupping. Focus. After a while, they go away. Believe it works (for me). If you get good at it, you can control your hiccups. Tell them when to go and then tell them to leave. |
