it would help to know where you are sending it from (I am assuming U.S. but cannot be sure)
(1) western union ... seems like an option which is always exists even when nothing else does (not sure how much of this is legend and how much of it is truth) but western union is very expensive. not recommended unless you simply have no other choice.
(2) bank transfer ... you have to have a bank account as does the party you wish to send the money to ... can be reasonably expensive, especially for small amounts. My bank charges a flat $35 fee for international wire transfers.
you will need to know the "BIC" code of the receiving bank as well the account number which you want the money to end up in.
(3) apparently you can deposit a check in U.S. dollars from a U.S. bank directly in some banks in India (a friend from India uses this method to send money to his family). This seems like the most economical way although I am not sure if this is a widely accepted practice.
(4) I believe you can use services like PayPal ... of course this would require the receiving party to also have a PayPal account
(5) major credit cards ... this is useful only if you the party on the other side can process credit cards ... generally this is also pretty cheap (check with your c. card company about their terms, conditions and rates on international transactions, exchange rates and applicabile fees to be sure) and might be useful, if for example, you are sending money to cover a large purchase by a family member.

simplest way is to open an ikobo account, they will send to your relative in India a VISA card that can be used in any ATM machine to withdraw cash, the amount of cash is dependant on how much you fund the Visa. You can replenish the amount of money when ever you want and your relatives can withdraw it when they need it.
here is the website
