"A funny thing happened...."
It's always best to start with a little humor. It puts both you and the audience at ease. Find a humorous story that is appropriate to the occassion.
Do not, at any point, say anything about being nervous even if you are nervous. The will set up a negative framework that they will use to judge your speech from that point forward. It's natural to be nervous if you don't have much experience.
Have some notes available, preferably in an outline but don't over rehearse. You need to appear natural.
Nothing bad can happen to you. You will do fine. |

I have 3 suggestions; don't use them all in the same speech.
1) A humorous story (clean and appropriate).
2) A Famous quote (which demonstrates some sort of wisdom)
3) A story with a point taken from the life of successful people (living or dead)
Often your opening is the last thing you will write: after you have thought through why you will make the best class president and explained why, you'll have a better idea which of the three suggestions you will want to use.
Regarding suggestion three (my favorite of the 3); It will take a bit of research to find a story that is relevant to you potential presidency, but a few suggested people you might look into are like Sam Walton, Ben Franklin, Martin Luther King, Sports Stars... search on words like Integrity, Determination, Positive Attitude, Can do mentality... ect
Best of luck Madame President :) |

Pick up on the key issues in your school- sort of a paragraph on what you stand for, what you hope to achieve from being class president, and how much of a good leader you can be.
If only real politicians would do that instead of hurling insults at each other... |

Open with a very short story or a joke. Whatever you do don't start with "My fellow Americans." Hey, good luck, hope you win. |

My fellow classericans, don`t lend me your ears, you will need them to listen to me as I ask for your vote.
If you vote for me, great times will come, because my plan is to... |
