All the relevant advice is on the Bank of England website:

Whoever thinks that notes are produced by the Mint needs to check their facts. The Mint make coins, the Bank is responsible for notes. |

the best way to tell is where the red square is on the note rub it against a white plain peice of paper and if the ink smudges onto the paper its a good one because fact is the ink that the notes are printed with never fully dries where as if it were a fake the note has either been scanned from a computer or photocopied and the ink will dry out completley. |

Hi!
You can buy yourself a special marker pen that you stripe across the note, and if it turns a particular colour - it's fake.
If you take it to a bank and it's fake - they will KEEP the note, but will NOT give you anything in return except a receipt to say the note has been confiscated!
Hope this helps! |

It's got a picture of Delboy on it. LOL
Seriously you need to check the watermark and foil strip in inside by holding it up to the light. |

a local shop keeper may let you borrow their pen to check the authenticity of the bank note. Failing that they may offer to check it for you. Failing that shops also have an ultra violet light to check for the metalic strip inside it. When putting the money under it - it shows up. |

Security features on notes include:
*A watermark when held to the light
*Some banks put either a silver stripe or a water stripe vertically down the note
*The print on the note is slightly raised
*If you fold the note in half and rub it on a blank piece of paper a small amount of ink should come off onto the blank page
So if the note does not have these then it is probably forged. |

Never have £50 notes. They used to offer them as part of my pension payment at the post office but i always refused them.A lot of shops wont accept them. The post office doesn't bother now and does not stock them. For ordinary people the £50 note is not on and is not used, It might as well be discontinued. |

Easiest and most simple way is to rub it on a clean sheet of white paper.!
If genuine there will be an ink residue left, as the ink used by the 'mint' does not ever completely dry. |
