Make sure you are comparing like with like and take into account that in the US purchase tax is added after purchase and you sometimes get two taxes a local tax and a VAT like Government tax. |

When I have visited the UK, I've noticed that prices of items in pounds is usually around the same number as it would be in dollars in the US. And since the pound is worth about $2 US, that would track with your observation.
British salaries also seem to be higher than in the US, though. Supply and demand does much of the driving of prices, so if people make more money (adjusted for the exchange rate) then demand would likely be higher, which would drive up prices.
For some specific items like petrol, a big part of the price difference is taxes. |
