I would suggest that you save up your allowance, birthday money, etc and buy yourself a prepaid phone. There is no way I'd let either one of my teenage girls have a cell phone. They aren't responsible enough. |

If you foot the bill and are responsible-like you have a job, clean your room, obey them, are doing great in school, etc. then they will be convinced and you will get your cell phone. In the meantime, GO CLEAN YUOR ROOM< YOU SPOILED BRAT. |

Why not use email from your computer? Doesn't cost anything and you can send pictures. Some people have computers that send voice, and you can do that via Yahoo if you like.
Myself, I find many people are too lazy to write letters, now done by email. They only talk on the phone, run up long dx charges, and do not plan their communication carefully, ahead of time. This wastes even more money, often requires call backs, and leaves recipient with no hard copy and more unanswered questions, plus the need for a great memory. Much more miscommunication and ambiguity. This is especially true of government workers.
As for serving the public, that they do not do on the phone, but have turned over to the computer. You know? The one that offers you seven choices, none of which apply.
I do not like talking on the phone, but if I decide to send voice messages, they will go via computer and internet.
If you work in an extremely busy office and people do not use email, but owing to laziness leave voice messages, often long and rambling, you can sometimes find 100 or more of these at the beginning of a busy day. Then you must go through all of them very, very slowly. Also the problem of those who have mush in mouth, don't really know who or what they want or how to phrase it in English. And you must process all that serially.
Email is much better, full parallel, and people are more careful about the words they choose when writing. Not always, of course, but even the drivel can be seen all at once, rather than wearing your ear out.
I say forget about a cell phone, or just buy an old one somewhere that can still be used for 911. Then you are prepared for emergency while on the road.
With emergency use only, you don't have to worry whether or not there is a possibility of brain tumors.
If you have a really good friend to keep in touch with, why not check out cheap walkie-talkies, or learn about CB. Minor skills that will give you a hand up in the world, and put you ahead of all the lazy cell phone users.
They are always ringing in inappropriate places, too. And if you leave one in the wrong place unattended just a couple minutes too long, POOF -- it disappears forever, another expense.
There you go, a lot of help for free. Walkie talkies:

talk to them about a prepaid phone. tell them that you will pay for the minutes. that way there is no contract, and you can only talk on it according to what you can afford.
a lot of companies have a pay-as-you-go plan that is great for teens. talk to them about a plan like this! |

show your parents you are mature enough to handle a cell phone.. It is a luxury, not a necessity. Not sure if schools ban cell phones in your country.. but in mine, they have kinda loosened up coz the govt recognises the advantages of owning a cellphone..
i didn't have any problems getting a cell phone from my parents, but that was when i was age 16... my bro's got it lucky he's got it at a much younger age.. and my cousin, she's 10yo this year, and she has one.. it's a pre-paid one, but she only gets to use it during the weekends.. |

pre-paid is the best way to go.Tell them to put however many minutes they want to put on there and if the minutes run out then you'll pay for them yourself! |

tell them how much more safe you will be w/ a cell phone. Remind them of all the awful things that could happen, and instances you would benefit from a phone. |
