How do I do this?
I am trying to ship something internationally with fedex online. They want me to fill out the box marked "total customs value." What does this mean? Is this the value of what I'm shipping? It's just some documents, so should I put 0 US dollars?

It means the value on which you have to pay customs taxes. While they may be "only documents," the receiving country may tax them. If they are only documents, why are you shipping them via FedEx instead of the mail?

In any event, you need to ask FedEx.

In the shipment informationpart (#3) write document ignore " harmonized Code and Contry of manufacture" boxes. In value for customs put 0. Remember to sign the section #9. good luck

Lord Tyrant
This is the value of the item and is what they base the taxes on. It sounds like your package doesn't have any "intrinsic value", so you could put $0. If the recipient would normally pay for these documents, then use a reasonable $ amount.

i would put at least the cost of the paper.

probably put N/A or Zero. You can always call Fed Ex and ask them.

Yes, put zero or 10 dollars - if suggesting a value above 50 dollars, the recipient probably would have to pay duty and tax.

Import taxes are not made for intellectual work, so it's correct to state 10 dollars as the pure paper value.

Mopar Muscle Gal
total value.. is what the item is worth that you are shipping

No you should put the cost of man-hours it took to create the documents.

if it took 2 hours to create by a emplyee that gets paid $10/hr. then it costs $20 to make, so that is it's value.

MissSubversive
Put something like $10. The time and effort you are putting in to mailing these documents must be worth that.

Custom Value
Enter the value in U.S. dollars. Mandatory for all non-document international shipments requiring Customs clearances. Customs agencies require that a total value be listed for all packages in a shipment. Not applicable to UPS Letters or UPS Express Envelopes.
