If its an absolutely cold call, offer to take their number and say that if the person is interested, they'll call back. |

I once worked on the switchboard of a large financial company and we were told to say, "we do not accept unsolicited calls. If you'd like to pass some information to any of our employees, please feel free to mail something here to reception, and we'll make sure that it gets to the right person." But that's not much fun.
Who is it calling, sales people or headhunters? For sales people, just say "sorry, that person is not available" and put the phone down immediately - don't give them a chance to say "well, can I speak to so and so instead?"
Headhunters are more fun. I work for a recruitment company, so we know all the tricks in the book and we can pick them out a mile away. My friend uses "You're a headhunter, aren't you? There's no way I'm putting you through!" but then she's definitely not shy. Or, if they're calling for a colleague that I don't like, then I put the headhunter through hoping that they'll convince my colleague to move to another job.
I had a good one the other day which I know was *definitely* a headhunter, yet she was pretending to be my colleague's friend. This woman called and asked for my colleague by name. I told her that my colleague was working in Reading - that wasn't a lie; she really was. So the woman said "okay, I'll call her there" like she had her number and everything. Then ten minutes later she calls back and asked for my colleague again, and I again told her that she was in Reading, but the woman then says "you don't have an office in Reading!" Hahahahaha ... no we don't (my colleague was working at a client's site, not one of our offices) and it took her ten minutes to find that out! |

This is what we did at my company...I'm the receptionist at my co too.
The IT dept. made up a person with an extension & everything. I transfer all cold calls to this fake employee. They
get their contact, the employees are not annoyed & I have my sanity.
Hang in there...I know your pain. |

Just say to them " Does this apply if you are a Bankrupt?" it should put them off! |

Just let them know you're a business, the person they are asking for does not accept solicitations and they've requested that you ask callers to remove them from their call list. They are required by law (where I'm from) to follow this. |

put them on hold... and leave them there |

I feel your pain. Put them on hold, come back and say "our office manager says no thank you, she is not interested" or you could just say "no thanks, not interested". |

I know what you mean...
I've been coming up with a lot of creative ways
to get rid of them myself. one time I told a guy the
building was on fire and I had to go... The only problem
is they keep calling back. A lot times I'll try to turn the
tables and try to sell them something. Nothing will make
them hang up faster than the phrase "so do you own enough life insurance?" or how about this one "have you accepted Jesus as your personal savior ....." That one send a lot of people running away screaming. To be honest there is no easy way to get rid of them as long ad you own a phone.
All you can do is keep being nice , say no thank you and hang up..
Good Luck with that... |

Just politely tell them that your company doesn't accept solicitation calls and that if they wish to contact your company they should send a first class letter to the appropriate company staff. |
