instead of you paying the solicitor their costs personally either before they begin acting for you or after the settlement has been agreed they bill the third party directly and give you the settlement that is agreed with their costs being paid separately by the third party |

I was sued once by a labourer once and he ended up getting £1800.00 and the case turned over in the region of £8k. He made the least amount out of everyone |

A really smart attorney will turn down cases unles they feel certain that they have a 99% chance that it is a winner. Also , this no win, no fee, policy only applies to thier time. You can have other expenses to pay out of pocket such as video taped depositions from doctors and other proffesionals that are necessary in order to win your case. these can cost $500 + apiece. If you settle out of court most lawyers take 25% of your settlement, but if they have to actually make a court appearance it's 35%. Always make sure to read your contract they give you before signing, so you will have no surprises about expenses. |

they don't they get a higher amount- they tell you you're getting say £100000 and they actually get £15000 so they keep the £5000!
and sometimes it works on commision depending on what firm they go through. |

They file for costs to be paid by the other side which usually runs into thousands, there bill will be larger than your claim |

Cause you sign a contract in front of them so they can claim 25% off the people your suing as their fee, the case has to be authorised as claimable first though, I know cause we got a big fat cheque last year and paid our mortgage off with it. |

It's actually very simple: The lawyers who advertise "no win, no fee" don't tell you about the catch. The catch is they won't agree to represent you or take your case to court unless they are darn sure they're going to win. They'll give you a free consultation for the first visit, and if your case looks shaky they'll find some way to blow you off. Generally speaking, however, they're dealing with specific types of tort cases that have a high plaintiff judgment rate (that just means the person who sues usually wins). |

If they don't win your case you don't have to pay them. Since they win more than 95% they get paid a lot! Try 40% of what YOU win. That is if you win $100,00 they get $40,000 (plus expenses) so it could go to $50,000. Then the IRS taxes YOU on the $100,000 so you might keep $40,000 on $100,000 win (plus or minus). |

They don't get paid if you lose in court.
They take a % of the settlement if you do win. This % is usually higher than if you were to hire a lawyer by the hour, but sometimes (if you're strapped for cash) that's not an option. |
