V. Simpson 1024 | How do you beat the bank? |
My bank holds your checks every time you overdraw, but they keep changing how long its held so we keep overdrawing, and we're sick of working for the bank to "steal" our money, and we just cant get ahead. it costs to get our checks cashed somewhere else first..and depositing cash is the only way they cant hold it. the simple answer is "wait until the hold comes off" but i have to make bill payments on time...which conflicts. i hate banks and the way the operate..what else is there to do? |

Maybe you should look for a more user-friendly bank. They changed the law so that checks clear automatically out of an account, but I notice they don't automatically go INTO the account of whoever deposited them. So they've got our money in their coffers for a few days, earning interest for them, meanwhile we're getting screwed.
Usually a bank will cash someone else's check for you if you have an account with them, but maybe that's only if you have that much money in your account already to cover it. See if you can do that, and then just deposit the money.
Sorry I can't be more help, but I agree with you... banks are EVIL! |

-if you are customer in good standing with the bank and have been with the bank for many years they won't hold your checks.
-if you have enough to cover the checks when you deposit, they won't hold the checks
so - when you deposit a check, ask them...will there be a hold placed on this check ---if so fo how long....can we write checks against it now?
this will save you some problems...
also - you could take the checks with your id to the bank it is originally from and cash it on the spot.
payroll checksand governement checks should never be held, as they are always assumed to be good.
it won't help to switch banks---cause they all have the same policies.
you can also try to work with them and ask them to reverse some of the overdraft charges.
good luck ----been there too many times myself :) |

Ok, I work for a bank. First of all they need to make you aware of their funds availability policy which is the times that checks clear. There are different schedules for different types of checks, local, non-local, bank checks, money orders, etc. You may look into getting overdraft protection, therefore, your checks will be paid eventhough you do not have the funds in your account to cover. Be aware though that overdraft protection can be a line of credit and you will have to pay it back as if it was a loan. Some banks have overdraft protection where the funds are take from another account that you have and transfered over to the account that is overdrawn. May be a fee for this. I hope this helps and I know it can be frustrating. Customers scream at me all the time. |

My credit union doesn't hold my checks.
Also, if you do direct deposit and e-banking the timeframes are much shorter.
I'm not suprised they hold your checks when you overdraw. They want to make sure they get their money. Becuase you're actually stealing from the bank when you write a check or use debit card for money that you don't have.
The banks don't "steal" your money. You "give" it to them by doing things that incur fees. If you don't do the things that incur fees then you won't be giving them extra money, now would you.
If you hate banks so much then deal only in cash. Don't have a savings/checking/debit card from anywhere. Ask your employer to pay you in cash and keep it all in a safe in your house. Then you won't have to deal with banks at all. |

Simple answer is YOU DON'T !
They are in the business of making money and lets face it, no-one knows money like a bank.
You will be charged for almost every service otherwise they wouldn't be able to pay their staff, directors and shareholders. If you're lucky you will find they wont actually charge you to deposit, although this can depend on how you make your deposit too.
Meanwhile, it is a generally accepted law that you don't write a cheque unless the money is in the bank and available. There is on point in writing a cheque and then putting the money in the next day. This is basic fraud. So don't complain if you are charged a fee for overdrawing your account or having payment held up whilst other deposit 'clear'. |

First, you sound like you need to switch banks. With my bank, if you deposit your check before 3pm that day, it goes in that day. Try direct deposit if you can since it goes through at an exact time every time you get paid. |
