wyane b | How do you cope working in a small office where you are the outsider? |
This company is a small family run place. The average person has worked here for about 8 years. Change is not something that comes easily; in fact they will avoid it at ALL costs.
My position here originally required me to review certain procedures for compliance with GAAP. What I came back with was laughed at and I was then removed from the project.
Now I get to play assistant to my backstabbing boss and sit quitely in the background cleaning up the crap that I identified as problems before.
Trust me- I have been looking. This place is nothing more than a paycheck; and once I can leave- I will. I do not want to jump right out into something that is just as miserable.
Yes, the things that I mentioned our auditors have written up every year. This is not me trying to cause a problem; due to my training, I was educated that you do it right the first time.
Here we do things to make our employees who have been here comfortable. If they are happy - there is no problem! Additional Details I came into this situation with the understanding that they needed somone with experience and an educational background to move foreward.
Had I know that this position would result with me taking about ten steps down in my career goals and that I would become the company's glorified assistant- I don't think I would have made the same decision.
Seeing that I cannot change things here, I am asking for those of you out there in a similar mess- How do you get through the day? I look daily for something new, job market here is not necessarily the best.
Have had some interviews, but nothing seems to gel. I am very afraid to leave and wind up with something on the same level or worse.
But on the other hand, I do believe that good work is rewarded- just not here. |

I sympathise with you. It can be very uncomfortable spending a day, five days a week, somewhere you don't feel welcome. Particularly when you have to be there to keep finances coming in. The only advise I can give would be to console yourself with a couple of the facts, and a dry sense of humour.
Remind yourself of it being temporary, and that you get paid to do it. Keep a bottle of scotch in your desk drawer and one of those desktop calenders with jokes about crap bosses. Watch one episode of 'The Office', EVERYDAY.
Many people experience less than ideal workplaces at sometime in their life; some would say theirs sucks. My mum says 'it's the pits', which I never understand; possibly it's a reference to working in a mine of some sort.
If this has been of no use to you, please don't give me thumbs down. I don't sit up twelve hours a night answering questions, burning my eyes on the screen, inducing carpal tunnel syndrome, with no pay, for ungrateful askers. |

Sounds like there's no getting around them, and that you have your mind made up. I would definitely continue looking for another job. Put your head down and do the job THEY want you to do, even if you feel it's menial. If this is a first job, remember, it is a reference for you. Know when and where to pick your battles, and know also that sometimes you just can't fight city hall.
Many older "static" companies are having trouble remaining relevant and competitive in today's ever changing business climate. It could be that the company you work for is just struggling to stay afloat until the family hierarchy decides to close up shop and fly the coop for a nice Florida retirement condo. Just do your best, and get copies of any audit reports and what steps you took, or attempted to take to correct/address issues. This at the least should bring you some sense of satisfaction for having tried. More importantly, this covers your back should they try to pull any funny business that would lead to your being left go.
If you can make friends with at least one person in the office that helps (preferably someone that has some level of oversight into your job). You can later use that contact for a character reference, and if need be as a business reference, depending on just how much oversight he/she actually had into your job. You don't necessarily have to use your direct boss as a reference. |

Just remember that there are people who love you outside that office, and get through the day knowing you will see them when you get out. Also, never let them see you upset, always pretend you are upbeat, and don't throw a fit or explode because your situation is only temporary. |

ICK! I feel for you, Sir, as I had a similar situation only that my desk was placed directly in FRONT of my boss's desk at a 90 degree angle such that he got to stare at my profile all day and it creeped me out. And similar to you, I was asked to do ugly, aggressive work that was against my better principles but I had to generate income to pay my own bills and this was what I had to live with until I could make the jump elsewhere which included a big move cross country (specialized industry).
Try the old fashion technique of greasing you boss with different things in an effort to make you seem more like the nice guy versus the ridiculous fuss budget who dares to ask they follow GAAP or obey the law vs. face an IRS audit. Maybe you toss them an extra ticket to a game, remember someone's birthday or anniversary, do something extra above and beyond the call of duty. It won't fix your problem but it may move you more into the "family realm" so you are perceived as less the outsider.
Then get the hell outa there as fast as you can!
But it sounds like you've analyzed the problem fully and are doing what you can to just cope for now but to gain your freedom when you get your break. Good luck to you! |

If there's no way of changing the way these people see you and therefore treat you, you're going to have to change jobs. You're clearly unhappy in that position so until you're able to leave just tell yourself there are better things to come. Maybe take an mp3 player to work and listen to an audiobook, something educational, so you can be occupied with that instead of feeling alone. |

Good thing you're looking for something else! In the meantime, it wouldn't hurt to make some friends. I did it, amazingly enough, by keeping a bowl of candy on my desk. You'd be surprised how quickly people warmed up to me! |

until you find another job, i suggest find something to entertain yourself when all you can do is entertain yourself. I'm only a high school student, but when i know the material being presented in class, i take this opurtunity to do something i find entertaining, or useful to me at the time. Being at work, you could research new hobbies, or area's of life that you are interested in if you have access to entertainment. Just do your job, and go home. Relieveing stress if a hard thing to do, expessially when it keeps adding up, but something you find interesting can really help. |

Wow. That is really interesting to me because I'm just finishing up taking a Professional Auditing course. (graduate)
I can relate somewhat. But it seems like with your position that you are going to run into these kinds of problem probably more often than I will though I want to get into accounting.
Is there anything that you can do legally? Is what they are doing illegal? |

Headphones. That's what I do at work. I listen to music all day and play online as much as I can. I do the bare minimum of work because that's what I'm paid for and nothing extra is rewarded or even appreciated. |
