Sahara | How do you deal with this kind of boss? ? |
I am looking for coping strategies for the interim until I can find another job. My boss is disrespectful, unprofessional, lazy, forgetful, accusatory, judgmental, and thinks he is better than everyone else. Work is above him. I get a little pleasure when I see him scrambling from time to time for his boss because he's trying to cover up what he has not been doing. Additional Details He is a liar too. He says he's traveling for work when he's not. He has yet to complete a full week in months now, if it hasn't been a year yet. He came in one day this week for 1 1/2 hours. This is regular. He takes at least a 2 hour lunch and goes on the attack if I am at lunch, which I am entitled to. I rarely take my full lunch and I come in early every day. I will also stay late if need be. He is not appreciative of anyone's efforts. He berated a manager for something he did. He later apologized. He didn't realize he had done it. How do you suggest I cope with this? I've been dealing with it almost 2 years. I am looking for another job big time now because I just can't take the abuse anymore. I am a very good employee. I take my job seriously and I get along with everybody. I'm good at what I do because I put the effort in and I'm not afraid to ask questions and take the initiative. |

Keep detailed documentation of the work you do so there is a record if he tries to blame you for his failure/screw ups. Bosses like this will blame you for their inadequacies. Send copies of hostile, demeaning or offensive emails he may send to you to your home email. Save important work you produce. Save copies of anything from anyone that praises your work...emails from customers, co-workers, other depts. You may eventually need to claim a hostile work place and documentation is critical. This also protects you if he tries to give you a negative performance eval. If something happens to you, they can't access your personal email like they can your work emails.
He is probably always right, everyone else is wrong. If he has done something, no one will ever do it better. If he hasn't done it, it isn't worth doing and any one who has attempted it is an idiot....I worked for the same boss except it was a woman!
There are great websites on work place bullying. Lots of tips as well as legal issues/rights as an employee. This is becoming a hot button for many companies. Your HR dept. may be a resource for you to talk with, but be careful with what you say and to whom you say it.. In my case, the head of HR was good friends with my boss and had no objectivity when complaints were made and it backfired on a co-worker when she lodged a complaint.
Be careful who you trust in situations like this. Don't complain about him at work, you don't always know who is listening or what some one else will do. Don't ever write anything that could be perceived as criticizing him from a company computer. Many folks will toss you under the bus it it means they are protected. Lots of companies scan emails. They tell you they can, but don't tell you if or when they do it. Sad but true.
Culivate a mentor if you can. Join a professional organization to increase your network opportunities in the job search. Stay below his radar when ever possible. Try to avoid situations that gives him a legitimate work related reason to reprimand your work. He'll make it personal because his boss might think he is not doing his job. Sh** trickles down.
Don't let him intimidate you - like the school bully, once he knows he can get to you, he'll come back at you when ever he can. Strive to be as professional as possible at work because what goes around, really does come around. Listen to what his peers and his boss say about him or watch their non-verbal communication when they are together. Can you approach any of them or do they somehow support his BS? If he is like this this to everyone, can you collectively approach someone to discuss him? If your company offers EAP benefits that include paying for limited visits to a therapist, take advantage of it. An objective outsider is always a good place to vent..or cry.
If you want to take the risk, call him out on his behavior when it is directed at you using objective, non-emotional language that focuses on his behavior. It's risky but the school bully usually stepped back from the kid who challenged him. Document what happened.
Who knows, maybe HIS time is limited with the company? In the mean time, good luck with your job search. Be prepared for him to make your last days/weeks at the company miserable - or - he may request you leave immediately (like that day) instead of working out your notice period. You can present your documentation in a killer exit interview when they ask why you are leaving.
It is difficult to act like a grown up when you work for a child, especially when the child is your boss, but try to leave work at work. He isn't going to change and he is not worth the stress you are having.
BTW: I was fortunate to have a good relationship with my boss's boss and and talked to him (with my documentation) a couple of times about her behavior. He asked me to wait it out but nothing seemed to change. I left without another job and had a killer exit interview with HR and the boss's boss. I found out she was being unofficially monitored after my first conversation with the boss's boss and he formally registered a complaint with HR after I left. She was fired within a month...after collecting documentation from others in the dept.
I was very upfront about the situation during interviews and was told the reason I was offered my next position was due, in part, about my stance on respectful work environments.
Good luck to you. I understand your situation and empathize with your dilemma. |

continue to treat him with respect, even tho he has not earned it. this makes you the better person and then he can't say anything bad against you in the future. hurry up and get another job! |

I'd just resist until I can find another job...confrontation will only make it worse, seeing if you start one, you won't have solid proof or anything like that... |

hang in there till you find another job but just think it can always be worse but with those updates he sounds pretty bad i still win with one of the managers at my work but isnt there someone above him that you could mention this to |

He's your boss, he's allowed to be lazy. If you don't like him and you're a good worker just quit or play pranks on him till you're let go. Maybe the pranks will make the job more fun. |

ignore him if he's a jerk. and how about yelling back? also it'd be funny if you started telling him what to do and giving him work. lol.
if you have an HR department, talk to them surely they can help. |

There are two options open to you really.
1.You can quit, no one should be in a job they hate.
2.You can try to go over his head to his bosses and make them aware that he is being the way he is.
Failing that you could just kick him in the testicles, but some may consider that a little extreme. |
