How do you figure the tax if you only have the total?
Yeah.

hrunions
Basically it's 1.?? (?? is the percent 6% =.06)x=T
So, saying your total is 100 and your sales tax is 6%

100=1.06x
divide both sides by 1.06
and the Subtotal is 93.34 (rounded)

Subtract 93.34 from 100 and you have the tax. ($5.66)

This is assuming that by total you didn't actually mean subtotal. In that case just multiply the subtotal by the sales tax percent.

Fall Down Laughing
The tax on what? The total of what? What state or country are you referring to. Maybe if you gave some details, someone could help you.

serf
Solve for x T = x * t + x
T = Total
x = price
t = tax rate

x = T / (t + 1)

(Total X taxrate) / (100 + taxrate)

You make no sense. If you have the total is tax included or it that extra?

cookie
Ours is 6% in Indiana. Take total x this. Is that what you wanted to know?

you need to know exactly the percentage, like if you're doing state tax figure out what state wants what percent. EXAMPLE: i live in texas and we do 8 cents to the dollar. you have to know that first.

tax is figure by take your state tax unit let's say 6.75% and multipling by the total price we will say for this $9.99, when you get a figure for that you round up to the nearest penny and add it to the total of the cost. so this would 9.99 + .67 = 10.66

to calculate how much tax, or VAT dependant on where you live, follow this simple calculation:

total / 1.+ rate of tax

for example if an item cost 11.75, and the tax rate is 17.5%, divide the 11.75 by 1.175 - this will give you how much the item cost without the tax, or VAT.

hope this helps

chiefof nothing
Just a WAG but, divide total by 100 then multiply that answer by the local tax rate. Providing of course that all items in total are taxable.

pen411
If you mean you have a total that includes the tax and need to find out what the tax was, you'll just have to figure it by trial and error. I haven't seen a formula for reverse engineering the tax.

Like discounts.. say you have 15% off.. you can multiply the amount times .85 and that will tell you what the 15% off price is.

b_oregon.geo
As long as everything is taxable.

A(total)*t(tax rate)=T(total tax)
A+T=Total Cost with tax

rkaminski
Well, first you have to know what the tax rate is. For a practical lesson lets say 10 percent. That means that an additional 10 percent will be added for tax.
If the cost of the item is one dollar then the tax would be 10 cents so the total would be $1.10. That being said, if you paid $1.10 cents total and the tax rate is still 10 percent then you subtract 10 from 1.10 and end up with one dollar. Hope this helps.

Good Luck!!
