Stop and ask yourself this question every time you want to buy something: "DO I REALLY NEED THIS?" CAN IT WAIT? if your answers are 'no' and 'yes' or 'yes' and 'yes' respectively, than DON'T BUY IT!!!!

If your answers to the questions are YES and NO respectively, go ahead and buy it.

P.S. (this technique, if used constantly, will cut your spending a lot more than you think, trust me)

Warning: a large dose of self control is needed to use this technique.

For every 3 dollars made, put 1 into savings i.e. 401k or IRA, put 1 into a safety net for things that could arise i.e. unemployment, injury. And the last dollar you get to spend. I.e. food, entertainment, shopping.

Buy groceries for food instead of fast food. Don't waste gas by just driving around. Open a savings account that pays interest. Put 10% (or more if you can afford) of everysingle check into that savings account. Watch your money grow and grow. Never touch the savings account unless you have an emergency. When you get ready to retire. You'll look at your bank account and say, "That's how you make the most of your salary." and then you'll go sailing.

Spend some save some

dollsteak.
Its simple. You put away 10 percent of your pay cheque directly into some kind of savings account, that has compound interest. If you can't see it, you dont spend it. Of course you could choose any percent that fits with your day to day life. We all know how hard budgeting is, so this is much easier. And in 20 years you will have a nice stash of money and you can do whatever you want. It really pays off in the long run, and its better to start early. Im only 16 and I've started. Heh.

You should be saving enough so that if you lost your job, you could live on your savings for at least six months to a year. To do that, determine basic costs like food and utilities that come around every day, week, and month. Then think about costs like oil changes that come around every three months. Then add 30-40% to that total to cover illness, unexpected problems and general stuff that crops up.

That said, life is not about getting and spending. Life is about the moments that take our breath away. I have bought souvenirs from all over the world, but a particular piece of clothing is more meaningful to me because I hiked in it, lived in it, had great conversations in pubs in it, and all kinds of memories are a part of that piece of clothing. The souvenirs are nice, but they have not been lived in.

Remember that the cost of something and its actual price are often two different things. A fool, it is often said, knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. You do have to spend money; money is made to be spent. Everything in moderation. Save some, then earmark it for a special trip. Book well in advance and then make plans about where to stay and what you'll do while there. Then go, and leave room enough in your plans for the gods to find you.

Cheers, K

Buy an ounce per paychek, a 24 pack, and a little bit of gas.

These days it's not about how much you make. It's about how much you save. majority of the people I know that live the high life make strong salary but their total debt is higher than what they actually make.

Something to think about!
