How do you stop calls from a debt collector?
They keep calling us, sometimes 5 or 6 times a day, asking for someone we have never heard of. We have told them they have the wrong number, but still they keep calling. They interrupt dinnertime, call late in the evening, and are driving us nuts. They are sometimes very rude, and even though we've said, "TAKE OUR NUMBER OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM" the calls keep coming and coming. What should we do??

Since you are not the party of the debt, they have to cease and desist. Also, you can take the information down and contact the State Attorney General and file a consumer complaint under the fair credit act. Also, contact the local police about harassment. Most collection agencies are out of state.

Also threaten to file a lawsuit and you are recording the conversation since these agencies recording yours. I usually screen my calls now.

Next time they call find out the name of the company, the name of the person calling and the company's telephone number. Call the company and ask for the man/woman in charge & explain the situation. If the calls still don't stop it's harrasment & call the police.

Thats a tough one. Somebody proabably listed your number as their contact information. Unfortunatly, they are going to keep call because they have no way of know that you are not the person they are looking for. Next time they call ask to speak to a manager and explain the situation to them. Also, check your credit report. you may be a victim of identity theft.

If we don't know the number, we don't answer it. Still the annoying ringing of the phone, but there's different privacy systems you can purchase for your phone so you may want to consider that.

In my humble opinion...
ask for the manager and threaten a lawsuit

Get all of their information and tell them that you will get a lawyer to handle their harassment.

Go to this website and register your # on the Do Not Call Registry it is free.

http://www.ftc.gov/donotcall/

They have to stop calling once your # is on this registry. If this does not work and they continue to call I suggest listening to others who answered before me and speak with a manager and explain what is happening, when they are calling and that the person they are calling for does not live there.

When someone calls you, you can be as rude to them as you want without any liability. They iniated the call and you can swear at them call them names and do anything except threaten them. I would have a great time with them. A lawyer told me this

Mail them a notarized letter stating that they can no longer contact you by telephone and that they can only contact you by mail.

miss-snoopy
Not much you can do. They are not a solicitor so you can't block them by the" do not call registry".Monitor your incoming calls via caller I.D. or answering machine.Since you know the name of the person they are trying reach call your local phone company and tell them to have this person name taken off your number. If this doesn't work you may have to change your phone number.

Tell them in no uncertain terms that they have the wrong number. Make sure you tell them that according to the Federal Debt Collection Act that they can be fined for each instance that they call you, call your telephone company and tell them you are being harrassed. They should be able to change them with harrassment.

johnny wonder
i think you should subscribe to a caller id feature, once you see his number, dont answer, eventually they will get tired and go away.
never confront them as it will only inspire hatred and fuel their urge more to disturb you.

changing your number is another solution but brings another problem for your long lost friends and relatives that may want to contact you.
