When you don't have enough of it, it's VERY important. When you're rich as hell, it's pretty much worthless. That said, while money may not buy happiness, having NO money will certainly bring unhappiness (unless you're living in the wild). Try raising a family without any money and you'll see. |

In order to answer your question we must first define what money is. Money is a fiat. It represents value.
Yes without it we would be trading eggs for beef or a roof for healthcare. But what if the butcher didn't want eggs or you were a roofer but not in need of medical care, although the doctor was in need of a new roof.
You would have to first trade your eggs for something the butcher wanted so that you could then trade for the beef you wanted. Money makes the transaction easier because it holds the value until needed later. You buy the beef with money and then the butcher goes and buys a TV. You don't produce TV's so you couldn't have traded with the butcher.
The native americans saw value in beads and furs and food and traded in those "currencies". Pelts of fur or dollar bills, it is all the same.. they contain perceived value.
Some will tell you that our dollars have no value since we left the "gold standard". But what is gold? Just another thing (like pelts of fur) that we chose to place value in.
Can you live without money, yes. You can learn to farm, and to hunt and fish, you can build a cabin in the woods and make your clothes from deer skins. The settlers were very self sufficient. Is this something you'll be comfortable with? I doubt it.
Or is your question really ... Does money buy happiness? To that the answer is NO. |
