How is it that "Fat Chance" and "Slim Chance" mean the same thing?

CALAVA
Well, I always thought of "fat chance" as really meaning NO chance and "slim chance" as meaning that there is a slight chance though not likely. I also think that "fat chance" is a bit more crude than "slim chance".

Fat Chance is sarcastic - "Ya, You have a GREAT chance and winning the lottery."

Slim Chance is literal. "You don't have a chance in hell of winning the lottery."

When someone tells you that there is a slim chance of something happening, that means that probably will not happen. The phase "fat chance" means the same thing, but it is said in a sarcastic manner, thus negating any positive aspect that the phrase implies.

This semantic is easy.

"Fat Chance" means not a chance in the world.
There's a fat chance that George Mason will win the NCAA tournament.

"Slim Chance" means just that; the chances are slim.
George Mason has a slim chance to make it to the Final Four.

The inconsistencies of the American english language are profound and vast.

"Slim Chance" is the actual term used. "Fat Chance" is merely a sarcastic alternative meaning the exact same thing if you understand the sarcastic undertone.

because they are both chances... if I said "medium chance" you would still have a chance.
