How is overtime normally calculated?
Can someone put the answer into simple terms?
I've no clue, my teacher is crap. Doesn't teach us anything, goes through it all too fast, no-one understands anything because he's so quick.. yet gives us tons of homework on it.
God.

Thankyou!

some places do it differently.

some places consider overtime working more than 8 hours a day, and some places consider it working more than 40 hours total a week.

Big Dog
Isn't it time plus one half?

By law, and by what my company is implementing, any worked hour(s) more than 40 hours a total week is/are paid overtime.

it depends on where you work

Darren G
overtime is calculated as anything over 40 hours in a normal work week!!

Well, where I work I get paid time and a half. So lets say I make $30 an hour you take 30 and add half of 30 which is 15 so overtime pay would be 45 an hour!

Any hours over 40 in a week multiplied by 1.5, multiplied by the rate of pay is normally how it's done.

Usually time and a half, or double and a half. For example if you make 10 bucks an hour you would get paid 15 bucks an hour for time and a half, or 25 bucks an hour for double time and a half.

i think...its if you work over 8 hours a day...nd u work over time....for every hour over those 8hours u get 1.5times the pay....like regularly u get $9 an hour, then over time u'd get $9+$4.50=$13.50 an hour....thats how i think it works

Robert W
Overtime is normally time and a half. So if you earn $7 per hour normally, overtime would be $10.50 per hour.

Time and a half. That is, you take your normal rate of pay, figure half of it, add that to your normal rate, and that's what most people make for overtime.

If you make $10 an hour normally, you'd make $15 in overtime.

in us every hour u work past 40each week is paid at time and a half

if u make 10$ an ht and work 50 hrs 10hrs will be paid at ot of $15

Johnny earns $6 per hour. A normal work week is 40 hours. If Johnny works a full week, he gets a gross amount of $240.
If Johnny works more than 40 hours, he is entitled to overtime. For the majority, overtime is 1 and a half times your hourly rate. So for each hour OVER 40 that is worked, Johnny would earn $9 per hour ($6 x 1.5). If Johnny worked 45 hours, he gets $240 (40x6) as his base pay and $45 for his overtime (5x9). $240 plus his overtime of $45 is $285.
Hope this helps.

Normally overtime pay is computed by multiplying the amount you would normally make for the overtime hours, multiplied by a multiplier.

As an example, if you earn $10 per hour, and you work 10 hours of overtime, your regular pay would be 10X10, or $100.

With overtime, you multiply this by a multiplier. As an example, if you earn double for overtime, you would multiply the $100 by 2, and earn $200 for your overtime.

- Overtime is normally earned for hours earned in excess of 40 hours per week, or in some cases 8 hours per day. These specifics are normally regulated by state and federal law (and may vary by where you live)

- The multiplier is always at least 1.5 (for time and a half), although employers may pay more if they choose.

In most states, overtime is paid at 1-1/2 times the regular rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 per week.

I can understand that your teacher would not know a thing about how a real job works.

By law, unless salaried or under contract, overtime is calculated for hourly paid employees who work over 40 hours a week at 1.5 times their base pay for each hour over 40.

Simpler: 40 hours is considered a normal work week. At a wage of $8.00 per hour, an employee could expect to Gross $320.00 in a normal work week. If the employee works more than 40 hours in a single week, then that employee gets $8.00 per hour for the first 40 hours plus 1.5 x $8 or $12.00 per hour for each hour past 40 that they worked.

Example, with the above mentioned wages, the employee worked 45 hours. They would Gross (before taxes) 40 x $8=$320.00 + 5 X $12=$60.00 or $380.00 for that week of work.

This is crucial for employers that pay employees every 2 weeks. Some employers try to "average" the pay period so that you only work 80 hours in the 2 week period, sometimes 45 hours the first week and 35 hours the second week, but only give you 80 regular hours of pay. Be careful of that, you would get 75 regular hours and 5 hours of overtime in that scenerio as overtime is figured WEEKLY, even if you only get paid every 2 weeks!! Does that make a difference? Well taking the $8/hr employee, 80 regular hours comes to $640.00 for 2 weeks, the overtime pay, but short regular hours comes to $660.00. He would have cheated you of $20.00 by law.

In Georgia, and most states, overtime is anything over 40 hours in a single week. In California, I believe that they have a law that says more than 8 hours in a given day is overtime. Here in Georgia, overtime is paid at a rate of 1.5 times the normal pay rate. So if the normal pay rate is $8 per hour, if you work more than 40 hours in a given week, we'll pay you $12 per hour for the hours in excess of 40.

It really depends on where you work and how they term "overtime"..
For some it's only for Non-Exempt employees who have worked over 8hrs/day some it's 40hrs/wk and some it's even 80hrs/2 weeks (this is incase you want to make up hours the next week).
With that said, I have seen some companies (with employees working on contracts), paying even Exempt employees overtime, however, these bunch here are paid the exact amount of their regular time per hour for every overtime hour worked. So if the regular pay for the Exempt employee is $35/hr, then every overtime hour worked, this employee will be paid at the rate of $35/hr.

For the non-exempts, the time and a half just means that if you make $10/hr, on overtime you'll make $10 (regular time) + half ($5) which is $15/every overtime hour worked.

Good Luck!!

Overtime is very simple. Some places consider overtime to be any time over 8 hours in one day, and most places consider it to be any time over 40 hours in one work week. For overtime any time over the specified amount is calculated and 1.5x. This means if you work 42 hours in one week you get paid for 43 hours because you get the extra half hour for every hour over 40. It is not extra money per hour it is extra time per hour. So if you work 40 hours in one week and 10 hours of over time you get paid for not just the 50 hours of work you did but 55 hours because you get half again the time you spent past the 40 hours.
