There is actually a sport where people compete at holding their breath under water. The sport is called static apnea. You can research in online. I believe the world record was somewhere around 8 or nine minutes. I have personally been able to hold my breath for 4 minutes underwater and 5 minutes laying on my couch. It is harder underwater because of the pressure on your lungs.
