I think that really depends upon what you consider currency. As you know, most countries either have their own or share with another Nation that they have ties with. Some don't have full ranges of currency, like The Cook Islands which has it's own coinage but uses the New Zealand dollar for anything over $1 (or at least they did when I was there a few years ago).

There are also companies that have their own "currency" such as Canadian Tire which I'm sure you are familiar with. Sure, theirs is essentially a coupon system but there are a number of places besides Canadian Tire that will accept it.

I have yet to find a currency converter online that lists all the worlds known currencies so you can't go by that alone. About the best list I've found thus far is from the wikipedia link below. It will give you an idea anyway.

According to their list there are approx 191 recognized currencies in the world.

Just wanted to point out a couple of "exceptions" to the rule that every naiton has its own currency

1.) Due to a variety of factors, some countries / regions do not use their "own" currency but rely on other currencies. Example: Palestine (where I come from) uses a combination of Israeli Shekels, Jordanian Dinars, and US Dollars (the Israeli shekel being most prevelant of course)

2.) Some countries have "unofficial" currencies that equal or evenn surpass the "official" currency. For example: lebanon has the Lebanese Lira, but almost everyone also deals in US Dollars. Its not at ALL uncommon for you to walk into a restaurant and ask for prices in US Dollar and pay either in dollars or liras.

Many people think of currencies in terms of those little pieces of paper or metal we carry about. But most of the transactions we carry out in most countries will be done no with those currencies but with simple numbers in a bank account.

Those bank account currencies are part of a class of currencies that are called pegged currencies.

Pegged currencies have value in that they are promised to be kept in a fixed relationship to some widely accepted national currency, or gold, or silver.
We have many currencies that float relative to all others. They have no fixed value with respect to anything. But a currency pegged to gold or silver, or for example a barrel of oil is not a floating currency even though it floats relative to other currencies.

Currencies can be given value when a country makes it a policy to keep general inflation within some narrow limit. Canada has recently maintained its inflation rate below 2% by policy, to maintain the value of its currency. This has become difficult with USA inflation running higher. Avoiding having the Canadian dollar appreciate 'too much' relative to the USD has become almost as important a policy as avoiding inflation above 2%.

But in effect, both Canada and the USA have no real fixed value for their currency, they are true floating currencies. Most currencies have no defined value, even when they are pegged to the value of some other floating currency or group of floating currencies.

So, our bank balances are pegged currencies, pegged to a floating currency that is given value by the current price of, and demand for Canadian export commodities.

When all of the world's currencies become floating, no defined value currencies, we might expect to find it practical to convert to a single world currency, mostly to remove currency from control by foolish politicians.

It would probably be easier to list the countries that didn't have their own currency. I can't think of any except those in the European Union where they all use the Euro (except for the uk, where they also use the pound.) Maybe some of the smaller countries get along by using a neighbor's currency? Each currency is offset in terms of what it can buy.

The easy answer would be "there are as many currencies as there are countries." But the fact is that some countries use the currencies of other countries; Liberia, for instance, uses US dollars. Then some countries have enclaves within their boundaries that use their own currencies, or, in some cases, the currencies of still other countries. Give me the old science fiction stories where everybody spent something called "credits."

On the main page, it gives you the current exchange rate vs. the Canadian Dollar (or whatever other currency you want to use) for the most common currencies. They are listed by where they are used.

If you click the link for "More currencies" it'll give you a choice of 320 or so different currencies.

Every country in the world has its own particular currency and the US dallar,as a medium of exchange of its internal use. For the finance of international trade, the dollar is widely used as a source of payment. The dollar is used for trading in crude oil.
