How many people understand that hard working poor people.......?
......sometimes have money and sometimes don't? That sometimes people give us things like computers? That sometimes were lucky for a while and have a real job and then, for no reason, our boss decides to make for the border or something and we're on the bottom? Do you rich people even get it? Or are you like Marie Antoinette with her "Let them eat cake if they are without bread" quote? Are you just stupid enough to sit there with all your cash floating and hear someone ask for help and right away get suspicious? Why are you the first ones to cut huge checks for questionable fundraisers for poor in other countries, but when someone here at home comes to you with a genuine need, you start looking for disqualifiers and excuses to avoid actually helping? Or you hand us a list of "charitable organizations" with phone numbers (some disconnected) which don't even do what they claim they do? And some things truly needed are not provided anywhere! We should trade places, I would be nicer.

Oh, and let's see, "white trash" comments prove you only help "your own". You didn't read all the way through this (cyanne) or you would see that I DO get off my butt and get going and sometimes life just doesn't work according to my efforts.

BRAVO!!! I could not have said it better myself. I get that attitude because I live in an apartment complex where some of the people are on an income-based government program.. I am one of them, and I am NOT ashamed of needing the help! I am poor and lazy?? NOT HARDLY!! I have been working since I was 15 years old! I am now 52.. I have a 10 year old to raise. I DO work.. AND I am in college again.. AND I tutor.. AND I am a writer trying to publish. My bills are paid each month.. I help my neighbors when I can.. I have two grown children I also help out whenever possible. I DON'T sleep at night, but I don't miss a day of work ever.. I even worked while I had pneumonia. LAZY?? come live my life if you think that way.. come survive in my little world and see how high and mighty and judgemental you are THEN. All of you who think you are so very wise and will NEVER be in such a LAZY position.. talk to me in 10 years and see how the world is treating you then.. Talk to me when you have worked and worked to gain a top position only to have the company sold right out from under you and your entire department is closed down.. leaving you out on the street. Talk to me when you are married, working, raising children.. and your spouse decides to walk out because it's EASIER than living in reality.. talk to me when you are newly divorced, have two small children to raise and have THREE jobs! THEN you will have the right to talk about lazy and white trash and whatever other derogatory term you choose to use .. you know the ones.. the ones you are TOO YOUNG and TOO IGNORANT to even understand.. Talk to me when you have reached the age of 52 and have actually LIVED.. THEN we will have a similar frame of reference. Until then, it would be wise for you NOT to judge people when you have no idea of their life or their story.

Ya know, I lived in Alabama for several years. I heard that a lot from white trash. Those same excuses. What it really comes down to is that you won't get off your butt and try to help yourself. I do support people here in my own city, rather than give to other countries. I buy food for the homeless shelter here and donate it monthly. I donate blankets, clothes, shoes, etc. to them as well. I also spend time with the Adult Literacy Council. From your whining, it's obvious to me that you don't want anything better nor will you try to make anything better for yourself. There's a big difference between white trash and those who are truly hardworking and poor.

Well i have learnt that most people go by the rule.. "whats in it for me, if i do this for you". Not all..but most.

Never rely on people..it just doesn't work.

rich people are smart and poor pple are dumb. the reason they are poor cause they have a kid which costs over 500k to raise from 0-25 includes college expense too. if they dont have a kid then they can be rich too but instead they choose to have 3 or 4 kids and live on welfare. most poor pple are lazy bums to leach off the rich. i hate poor pple making a mess in this country.

I can TOTALLY relate to this. First off, let me say to a certain answerer that I AM NOT WHITE TRASH!!! I never have been. And I am by NO means LAZY!!! I have always worked my a$$ off to provide for myself and my kids. Ask anyone who knows me. How can a person really avoid living paycheck to paycheck when they make minimum wage for fast food with almost all of that money going towards bills. Every time minimum wage goes up, so does the price of everything else so we're no better off than before with the "raise". I can't get a better job because there's nothing available without experience or a degree in something. Then it's a matter of how can you get experience if no one will give you a chance. I personally would love to go to college so I can get into Auto Body but to do that I would have to spend all day 5-6 days a week in class where I'm not earning any money. I have looked into this already. That leaves no time for work let alone my kids. Sometimes no matter what and how hard we try we can't better ourselves. It really sucks.

im hearing you... but i don't dwell on it .. i don't want to be bitter like you and i don't want to be greedy ,selfish like them.. just get on with it and make the most of it ,lifes too short, im happy with a roof over my head, food on the table , a car and just enough to scrape through with bills, thank god for laybys.. i have my family and friends around me and im happy with what ive got which is the basics so i rekon im pretty rich!!!

PREACH SISTER! That isn't a Question, but it's a great paragraph! Sounds like this particular scenario is a little too close to home though?? Sounds like you asked someone for a "donation" & you got the shaft?

Don't let it bring you down! You and me and about a million others are right where you are. So, your in good company. Be cool!

And to "OLDMAN": Are you too old to use punctuation and grammar? Or perhaps they didn't teach that in your "era"?

And to Cyanne: It is obvious to me that this girl is "blowing off a little steam". Because we don't have all the fact's about her situation, don't you think "kindness" or even "civility" would be in order?

Or does "volunteering" at the local "YMCA" give you permission to be rude? Do you know what the "golden rule" is? Ironically, this girl may have just had a bad day at work or asked her Mom for a $100 for "Abercrombie". You never know.

But, your "stark" response lays on our screen like "road-kill". Smelling bad, and looking worse. You reap what you sow.

And to BLUE SEA Miami: You do realize this girl may be pulling your leg? She may be driving a Saab and wants her daddy to buy her a Beamer. Rich and "poor" is a relative term. She may be 14 and want a new puppy and is blowing off steam. Amazing how quick you judge.

I noticed you made sure your "avatar" is wearing a "suit". 'nuff said.

its not my fault ur poor. now, where is my butler?

That is the lamest, self-pitying comment I've ever heard- There are thousands of multi-millionaires in the US alone who started with nothing. Apple Computer was born in a garage, Hugh Hefner started Playboy in his basement with a credit card. Sam Walton of Wal-Mart began with a small general store. Attorney Jonnie Cochran was sleeping homeless in locker rooms, and Paul Dejoria of Paul Mitchell hair care was a bum sleeping on the beach in Hawaii when he began to study plants- the list goes on. America is still the land of opportunity if you're not lazy and willing to work hard. It helps not to be a drunk and have 5 children you can't afford to raise, too. By blaming others, you don't have to look within yourself and confront the reality for your situation. Many people have overcome far greater obstacles than you to amass great wealth. Get a life, start a business from home and quit bitching. Thank me later.

Being working poor by deffinition is a financial roller coaster. When I worked construction in my late teens and early 20s it was 1 month here, 2 weeks out of work, 6 months at another site a week out of work then came winter. I'd be working part time or out of work much of the winter then boom I'd have all the hours I could work for 3-6 months soon as Spring hit. Thats just how it goes with work so dependent on the weather.

As for rich people there are not many in this country. Most of the "rich" are paper rich. That is if they sold everything they owned it would not come close to their debt. They also could not go more than a couple months without a paycheck, some could not make it a month without their normal income. True they have fancier toys and they get to do things like take a vacation somewhere as well as affording to pay a car note on a newer car, nice house, etc. Still they are cash poor and really don't ahve much to give.

The ultra wealthy as often as not donate to charity for a tax break. That means they donate to charities that give them a good reciept and who qualify as a tax break. If they didn't they would not be rich for long. The side effect of the tax the rich to death philosophy as it has made philantrophy very difficult except for the ultra rich. The ultra rich often give because of peer pressure, to gain attention or to promote something.

The Gov programs are set up to help people who are there for the long term. Nobody else can afford to go through all the red tape or qualify. You have to prove that you did not survive for x number of months to qualify for Gov aid. Then months later you get it and as long as you play the game by the rules and expend as much time as you would if you were working then you get that aid.

Most charities are hooked up for emergancy cases. So the working poor again fall through the cracks. I can't count how many times the only way I ate the last couple days of a week was getting credit at the roach coach. When I wasn't working I'd give blood, cash in cans from when I was working so that I could eat, gas up my car to look for work and other essentials. The problem is survival cut into job hunting time. If I worked at a rent a whino job for a few days to make the bills then it put me that much furthor behind because what I made there was not enough to cover the bills. But while I was doing that I was not looking for a job taht paid the bills. If I didn't do it I was sleeping in my car or taking cold showers in the dark.

The answer is more complex than setting up a program or getting charities to be more aware of the working poor. There are just too many working poor and every min wage increase swallows up even more people into poverty. Inflation slowly creeps up on them and job losses. throw lots into this nightmare.

The solutions have more to do with a wage scale which allows people to live off what they make and for jobs to be out there that people can get.

SA
These are the outcomes of capitalist system, rich getting richer and poor getting poorer day by day. No proper distribution of income, all of the elements of systems supporting the rich. It is a pure exploitation based system. It is slow and study gripping all of us.

As far as aid to foreigners are concerned, it is usually given to black mail them inorder to help open markets for big multinationals. As soon as some country refuse to obey demands all the funds are channelized somewhere else.

Why should the "rich" be obligated? I can see how you feel, but it gives them no motivation to help when you try to bite the hand before it even feeds you.

Have you actually outright asked someone for money? Money is only a temporary fix anyway. You need to be able to maintain a good style of living.
