How much do companies really check your resume?

Miami Chef
It depends on the company and the position, but be as honest as possible because if they do check it and it is incorrect, you will probally loose your job and reputation.

LSU Man
NO, just lie on it, who cares.

For the most part they are waiting for a resume from someone they know to be given them. Very rarely do the ones sent to HR get noticed. People with odd or hard to pronounce names get passed over.

Geaux Tigers
Yes they do

Bex Girl
Very much

The resume is the lifeline. The economy is sh*t. I dont care what anyone says. Yeah, you can get a minimum wage job, but who wants that? Employers hate resume reading just as you hate resume writing. Most employers use a program to scan for key words. If your resume does not have enough of those key words, guess what you ain't getting a call. Don't do a cookie cutter resume either. Tailor your resume for the job. Look at similar job descriptions and use that to build your resume. Try to focus on achievements from previous employment as much as possible, rather than tasks you did. Unless its a bullsh*t job they will check. if you see the ad, guess what, so did 50 people before you. Stand out!

Big ones, throughly

It depends on the company. Large ones will do a background check and call former employers and schools, and verify enough on your resume to give them confidence that you're not lying. I've seen companies (Siemens) hire someone before the background check is completed, and then a week later let the employee go when information turned out to be not as he had said.

if you're tempted to "embellish" your resume, it could really come back on you big time.

isobiadesma
All they really want to know is can you do the job.
So most of them don't check your contacts unless it's an international thing where it's standard procedure. Or if you look like trouble in the interview they might.

Education, they're probably not going to check whether you completed what you say you have but they might ask for diplomas in the interview.

Work experience is the main one. But like I said. They rarely check your contacts, so just put down your reasons for leaving and leave it at that.
