Hmmm, well without the small business, I would say roughly $110,000 a year. NYC is very expensive, nice clothes (depends on what you call nice. GAP isn't nice) are expensive and living life is getting more and more costly by the day! Plus, furniture is pretty pricey too, I mean, you could actually end up squandering away a good 20 thousand if you furnish a whole home with halfway decent stuff. If you go to Ikea, well, you'll probably end up furnishing the whole place for a thousand dollars. Anyway, a psychology FIRM would mean that you have employees that you have to pay, and that's out of this world expensive. I'm guessing you want to start your own office to do your psychology pracitce yourself, and renting that space probably isn't that expensive in terms of business expenses. Because renting a restaurant is like $10,000 a month in some places but renting a medium sized office in a random office building is probably only like $2000 a month. So probably another $24,000 added on to your already $110,000. But I probably am overshooting for safety. I guess you would be able to swing it all for $100,000 a year. The loft is going to be like $2000 a month as well. So between your home and business you'll spend $50,000 a year. The other fifty will be easily spent on nice clothes and GAS and bills and food, etc. |

NYC suburbs would be NJ or Connecticut - probably $100k a year just to survive, plus 6 months living and business expenses (cash) in advance until your business started making any money |

Renting a loft in NYC will likely be at least $1200 (most likely more if you don't want t a shack). Expect to pay the same (most likely more) for a business site per month. So... you better be making over 100k a year to be able to eat, shop, and insure everything. |

The Suburbs of NYC are quite varried in pricing.
Just to clarify, "suburbia NYC" means outside of the 5 boroughs of NYC, it does NOT mean within the city limits.
To touch on Manhattan pricing, you need to make $120,000 or more a year to live decently in Manhattan. This price is quite a bit less for the other 4 boroughs. Bronx, you can probably get by with a $80,000 income (but you dont want to live there), Brooklyn can be cheap - $60,000 a year, while Queens, the icest non-Manhattan option - will offer private rentals for pretty much any budget.
Long Island is one of NYC's most popular suburban areas. Average property tax for the 2 non-city counties of Long Island (Suffolk County and Nassau County) is about $10,000 however, since you're looking at rentals, it's a different story.
I have a $1500/mo + utilities 2 bedroom apartment in western Suffolk County. I would only need to make about $65,000 a year to maintain it and my current lifestyle and it's the best priced legal 2 bedroom apartment on Long Island that is also NOT a private rental. I dont do private rentals. Too many deadbeat landlords.
The average price for a 2 bedroom apartment is about $1650/mo. Average price for a 1 bedroom is $1460/mo. Average price for a studio/loft is about $1200/mo.
Low end picture is maybe $40,000 to just get by on Long Island.
The northern suburbs are just as expensive.
So lets say you get a $1450 1 bedroom apartment:
$1450 - apartment rent
$80 - LIPA electricity - low end number, assuming you dont leave the lights on day and night.
$40 - house telephone
$90 - cable tv and cable modem
You might also have to pay in to a water bill. My heat and hot water costs $51 a month. I always pay the same and build up a balance with them to ensure regularity of billing. Right now, I've got a -$187 balance, meaning that I could go nearly 4 months without paying if my usage stayed the same. |

Okay well a nice condo in New York City is about $3750, if you get a good deal...thats monthly. Nice clothes? So like designer, would probably be even more then your rent. Starting a buisness is hard in NYC, because renting there is extremely overpriced. Food and furniture is the same price as any other major city. Its going to be alot of money. Probably $100 000 to start. |
