8 hours per night is normal. However, you can train yourself to operate on less sleep for periods at a time. Some people need only four hours per night, some people don't need any at all, literally. I just read a story about a man in China who literally hasn't slept a wink in 40 years. He's perfectly healthy, just has no use for sleep.

actually it can be from 7 to 8 hours if you are between 16 to 30 and as you get older you sleep less, of course babies are the ones who sleep more because they are developing.
