How about hanging out with people who enjoy the same things you do? Already you will be in a win/win situation. You will be enjoying your activity and developing relationships. Don't cut yourself short. Work on appreciating the things you are good at. People with a good self image of themselves tend to do better in social situations. It's just the way it is.
Be comfortable with yourself. Do the things you love. If you don't know what you love, how about trying new things? Sports or non-sports (like miniature golf). Chess or photography. Writing or drawing. Acting or playing an instrument. Skiing or sledding. Dancing or hiking. Just do things that are fun for you. When you know what you like, it's easy to walk up to someone and say, "I'm going out for a hike to take pictures of deer. You have to be really quiet, but it's lots of fun. Do you want to come with me?" Bingo! You are out doing something you like and building a relationship. Win/win! Give it a shot. You aren't a loser!
