How sucessful are those annoying telesales calls which interrupt your evenings?
"I'm not selling anything" - yeah, right - why the heckfire are you calling me at 9pm then?

They witter on and on not giving you an 'in' to stop their waffle.

When you eventually reveal that you rent and can't have a load of soffits and fascias attached to your house they just hang up, without so much as a goodbye...

Does anyone ever really sign up for a free holiday, a mobile phone deal or whatever they are selling?
Additional Details
I usually keep them on the phone for a while pretending I can't hear them properly, or am having difficulty understanding - inevitably they hang up on me frustrated, which is exactly where I want them.

My next step is to tell them to do themselves and everyone else a huge favour and leave their jobs, and burn the business down.

Never sign up for anything, i get so many of them that i've stopped being polite, i just tel them to **** off and put the phone down. In fact we've jsut been to Tesco and got approached inside by some smarmy twat in a suit asking if we collect clubcard points - duh were in Tesco of course we do - do you have a BT line was his next question, i was so annoyed i got right in his face and said - or rather snarled **** off you mug whatever your selling i dont want it, im trying to buy groceries now **** off out of my face. This was something of a misnomer as it was infact me who was very much in his face at the time :)

I'd have smacked him if he'd said so much as one more word, I object to being hassled when im trying to buy bread.

I either start talking dirty to them(huge entertainment value) it is hilarious they don't know what to say.. or ask for their home number and offer to call them back while they are having their dinner. Or ,start asking them bizzare questions like, do you know how to get blood out of the carpet? tell them to hang on shuffle around saying "oh my Gosh" etc.. then come back on the line and continue like nothings wrong.. LOL :0) Have fun!!!

They are a goldmine for me!

I set up a special website just for telemarketers and pitch them on how they can ditch that dead-end job and get rich on the Internet like the rest of us. Think about it . . . they must be desperate for money if they're doing that kind of work for minimum wage.

Two things to remember is:

1) Companies don't spend huge amounts of money on things that don't work - so they must.

2) Secondly people that do this work usually have to - in that they need money and can't do anything else. It must be an awful job.

When you get one of these calls say politely that you are not interested please take me off your list.

If they persist speak over them and say that you will be putting the phone down now and then do it.

Some of the so and so's ring back - in which case they are fair game. I tell them that the next person from their company who contacts me will be greeted with the full force of my vocabulary! I then leave the phone open on the side and go and do something important!

The next call from the company gets a very unwelcome ear full!

It works and is fairer on the callers - who are after all humans.

In my lowest ever career point (summer hols from Uni) I worked in a telesales department persuading people to change their gas and electricity suppliers. My target was switching 5 people per hour, which I always hit. You just have to have the gift of the gab!

Still, it remains the worse job I've ever done in my life!

The usual success rate is that for every 100 people called 2 will eventually do business.
As this is usually for large ticket items or loans etc it is well worth the time and expense of cold calling to raise business.
Pain in the backside though.

These are always unsuccessful with me. If they don't stop talking just put the phone down.

1) Answering machines were made just for this pupose let them answer calls that you dont' want to take.
2)No tele marketer is supposed to call after 9pm.. if they do so you tell them what time it is and tell them you are reporting them!
3)Signing up for anything on the phone is very risky and not very bright.

It must be an effective method for business as it keeps on happening more and more often-- if it didn't work they wouldn't keep doing it

The fact that they call at all tells us that there must be more money to be made from takers than from the cost of cold calling. The best way to undermine this model is to keep them talking or waiting as long as possible without buying a thing. Canvassers have even rung my mobile sometimes, surprises me that they can afford to do that but it must bring them business.
