How to fill in unemployment gaps on your resume?
How to fill in unemployment gaps on your resume?
In Feb. 2006, I was laid off from my job and received a 6 month severence. I spent the 6 months time caring for my sister, who has 4 children and whose husband works 80 hours a week. I then traveled for 2 months, planned a wedding in 3 months, and have been living overseas...I did take a 6 month language class and after that ended, I volunteer for the Red Cross at a second hand store once or twice a week.
How, or should I, put all of this information on my resume?

I have worked, but it was unpaid. Should this be on my resume?

You can actually make this sound pretty impressive. Your help with your sister shows LOYALTY and a CARING PERSONALITY,travel /living overseas shows you are open to other CULTURES,good at ADAPTING and like NEW EXPERIENCES and CHALLENGES,voluntary work ALWAYS looks good, planning a wedding means you have ORGANISAL SKILLS and learning languages you have an APTITUDE FOR LEARNING.
I had this problem when I came back from overseas and travelling and used it to my advantage. The bold print words you should incorporate into your CV in a positive way but also say you are ready to settle now(or they may be scared about you leaving a new job to travel).Good luck.

Where the gaps are, say what it was you were doing instead! Include all your voluntary work too! Include your 6 months of language class too because that could be invaluable to the company if they took you on.
Just be honest and make everything sound like a positive..

You should put all the positive points on your resume, as they show you weren't just lazing around for the entire time.

Travelling is seen as a positive thing on resumes, as is living overseas, doing extra curricular courses/activities, etc. You could put in the planning a wedding to show that you are excellent at organising large events.

Also, put the 6 months caring down, but word it sensitively. You can always elaborate on this time when you are called for interview...put something like "6 months spent in caring capacity". You don't need to put anything extra.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't worry about filling in gaps unless asked to do so. You should list all work, paid or unpaid, that is relevant to the position you're applying for.

yup tell them....just out it on there....just put...i.e.....firther eductaion. voluntary work...tell thema bout what u did...but of course put everything in a good light...of course...dnt say u stayed at all home for 3 months watching daytime tv lol...say u took some time out to help care for ur sister and her children..ect....hope this helps....

also say what u did with red cross...

shortbreadtin
Put it down as a career break, mentioning travel and your language class and volunteer work. It's perfectly acceptable to do this kind of thing these days.

Delgado
Unpaid work is still work. Its Voluntary work, and this can often be very useful when applying for many jobs cuz it shows you arent money mad and that you work hard even wothout incentive x

Yes put it on as it all counts as experience. Maybe miss of the planning a wedding though. Say a family carer for the looking after sister bit. I would have a separate part for employment gaps.

First 2 answers cover it. I'd be more likely to give you a job if you had career break and voluntary work, then explained what you'd done as you have above

You should fill in all gaps on your resume.

What I did was put "Domestic Engineer" for all the periods of time that I was a housewife and mother. A couple of employers were impressed with this.

We might as well have a glorified title...after all....being a wife (or mother) is a full-time, non-paid, thankless job....but it is the most important job in the world.

Being Creative, (as with the wedding planner) you can use this to your advantage, just choose your Printed words carefully, then if the interviewer asks anything... Change gears and show emotion in your wedding planner accomplishment..etc...

and most important, if you want a job...Then your the Interviewer, not them,,, Never forget that, Its always in the Back of your mind, "DO you want to work for them" this creates a aura of professionalism and self confidence to the employer... peace and good luck...greggace
