you can't

you cannot patent a word, or a name such as a place name,

Besides patents are for inventions, trademarks are for company names, slogans, logos etc. But you can't trademark a common word or a place name either.

Easy, you have to show you created the word and that the word is thought of by the general population to refer to a specific thing -- Trademarked is what you are looking for -- like Realtor -- that is a trademarked word. Call a trademark attorney for a free 30 min consultation.

yah you cant, you can trademark or copyright a word phrase.

Safina T

Nirmala

not really possible...only inventions (of solid objects) or processes and the like are patentable. a word, if it is a special trade mark or the like, may be able to be copyrighted or registered as a trademark, but even that requires that it actually apply to a product or service being marketed. so just a word that you came up with is not able to be legally protected as "yours".

Info_Please
Can't do it- patent is for hardware, machines, etc. Possibly a copywrite, but that is questionable for a single word.

Dr. Deth
you can't - You can trademark a unique name or phrase - but you need to apply for that and research to see if it hasn't already been trademarked - costs a lot of money

Hehe, that's pretty funny. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could patent a word. I make up words every day!

You can restrict or trademark a company name, so maybe.

You could copyright a word, in some jurisdictions, or make it a Trademark, but you would have had to have invented the word yourself. You cannot do this with standard words from our language, or someone would just copyright all the words and make us pay to speak or to write. I think.

nello
i dont think it is possible but maybe you can copyright it or something
