Spend more time having conversations with him. Don't let anyone use baby talk on him and don't let him watch shows like the teletubbies |

well aside from the obvious that you shouldnt have waited so long......you are probably going to have to get him some speech therapy. Lucky for you most schools provide this. |

A friend of mine has a son with the same problems. The school recommended a speech therapist. She has worked wonders!!! I mean, in a matter of weeks he was speaking 200 times better than before. Its like night and day with him!!! |

Yeah...call your school that your child will be attending and talk to the speech therapist, sometimes they will send people to your house or to your child's daycare to work with them. In Arkansas, the State will pay for it....Good Luck |

Speak with your family doctor about this, or have him evaluated by the local school board. My son didn't talk until he was over 2 years old. He tested at or above developmental level in everything except speech. Our doctor sent us to a pediatrician that specializes in developmental delays. We were referred to speech therapy and sign language classes. The speech therapy to get him to begin speaking and the sign language to give him tools to use immediately to get his point across in ways that didn't involve grunts, pointing, whining, biting or hitting.
Does your son have older brothers or sisters? If so, it may be that they do his speaking for him. Or that you have become so skilled at figuring out his needs that he doesn't feel the need to talk.
If there are no developmental delays, then you have to make his silence less comfortable for him. When he points at things tell him you don't understand and wait for him to answer. If you do know what he wants and he won't answer, you could say the word and wait for him to mirror it.
You can also practice sounds with him. Look him in the face and practice sounds like ma ma ma ma or le le le le. Say them over again and try to get him to mimic what you say. When he responds make sure that you offer him lots of praise.
Many community schools offer free speech therapy before kindergarten age to children that can benefit from it. I'd definitely call the school administration and/or your pediatrician and see if they can help you.
Hope that helps! |

my brother is 5 and he pretty much has the same problem. Don't worry tell his teacher that you want a speech therapist. It doesn't cost anything. He will start catching up after that. |

I share you the same exact problem. My advise to you is that you first diagnose the problem (whether it's Speech & Developement, hearing problem, or other problem such as ADD, ADHD, Autism, etc...) Keep talking to him at his age level, and also there is a good book called "The Late Talker" it offers good advises. Furthermore; register him in your district school for the school year, and ask them about the "Psychology Educational Testing", it is free from Uncle Sam; this test should give you a clearer idea about the problem of your son, and direct you accordingly. Good luck for the both of us. |
