How would yo deal with a bully same level Manager ?
I recently joined a small company because I like the area and I have other income from recent inheritance. I'm still into what I do at work. My direct manager is great and so is his manager, the ceo. But the ceo support another manager who bullies me, because although I helped him he both sees me as something that both scares him and deserves no respect. See, I'm a foreigner with some education and a background of years with two of the giggest companies on the planet. Modest jobs there ;-) Nevertheless, I learned and applied thing there. I like the way of my new small company but I get a feeling I'm not going to suvive long. HALP ;-) or should I just leave it? I still need the bit of extra money and the kick from suceeding in a place I do like- never mind the thunderbugs and the crazy rain!

Report him to the h.r department. If this fails wait till you are on your own with him and grab his balls hard and make him promise to never do this again. I guarantee he wont bother you again.

Scobill
Everyone else seems to appreciate you except this one guy , so I guess he must feel his position may be threatened by you with better skills.
If you like the job I would not leave because of him , but I would make sure it was known to immediate superior that this guy is making life at work difficult for you . I would imagine that you do have regular appraisals , even informal chats with your boss ?? and you must raise the subject at the first opportunity .
This sort of behaviour , whatever his reasons must not be allowed to continue .
Good Luck

Hold your own verbally, while still being nice, (don't forget most men don't do between the lines conversationally) and do your job to the best of your ability.

If they're 'being seen to be doing their job' then just make sure you're seen to do yours too!!

People like this are usually their own worst enemy eventually-let them make a rod for their own back while you rise graciously above it ;-)

Just confront him and ask if he has a problem with you and if he says yes, just tell him you would like to discus it with him in a professional manner. As you do not like and do not appreciate the way he has been treating you.

Bullies do not like confrontation, you never know he might back off.

Challange them

OK you are obviously bright.

You sense this other manager doesn't like you because you are a 'threat' presumably for any future potential promotions?

1/ If such an opportunity arose would you want to be considered, if not due to your own personal goals then slow down on the changes and brownie point earning and allow yourself to settle in and others to get used to you and your character.

2/ Make a note of any comments made in a diary (include date and time and note anyone else who was near who could be a witness) This includes hiding your sandwiches etc any petty actions that are aimed at intimidating you.

3/ Do not retaliate in kind but do not allow yourself to be intimidated, be prepared simply to say in response things like.
'I didn't like that comment' or ' I don't think that was fair' or 'I think what you said was wrong and if you continue I am going to complain'

4/ Tell your boss when you have 3 instances that you can show him in your diary and ask him to be prepared to get involved if it continues.
5/ See what reaction your boss gives you, if he wants to take the matter further immediately let him, if he wants to wait that gives you an indication of the level of support you can expect.

6/ If your boss waits when the number of instances reaches 6 or an earlier one where there is at least one witness go back to your boss and request further action and ask for the company handbook reference on bullying.

7/ Keep your husband/partner informed if you have one.

Sounds like a cruddy joke-job. Leave for a real company.

If it is, then leave and work with professionals. You can be much better rewarded for achieving and thriving elsewhere.

But not before you hammer the jerk who messes with you.

Screw up their business too- they're asking for it, and the consumer will be the biggest winner of all.

Richard
Just stand up to him, the more you let this prick do this the bigger he will feel, he probably gets a kick out of it, like most bully's do !.

You could take your complaint to a higher level, but that could backfire ?, your in a difficult situation, if it gets too much then look for another job and then if you get one then you could smack this bully right on the nose, which is what he deserves !!.

Good luck.

Jennie
Assuming that the bullying is verbal, say e.g. "I do not agree. Would you care to withdraw that remark?" If he withdraws it, you've won; otherwise, go straight to his manager and recount the conversation, and any other examples of his bullying which you can remember accurately.

Amy O
Don't quit cause then the bully wins. Just realize you aren't going to get along with everyone you work with. The best thing for you to do is be the best employee you can be. Work hard at everything you do. That way your bosses will be happy with you and maybe the bully will realize that you do deserve respect. If not oh well because he isn't the one who signs your paychecks.
