I often interview people for jobs on Wall Street, and would suggest the following:
1) "Why do you want to work for us?" -- You should have a genuine interest in the work, and be able to talk about why you have that interest. It helps to research the employer, the industry, and the role first, and then tie it to your experience or interests. For example, if you are interviewing for a job at a museum, you should be able to make your interest known by talking about your educational background in art or your passionate hobby of visiting art museums for the past 10 years which you would like to turn into a career...
2) "Why do you want to leave your current position / employer?" -- Always answer this with a positive spin. If you must say something negative about your previous employer, keep it brief and impersonal. The two most common answers that I hear are either 1) growth (more challenge, more responsibility, etc.) or 2) personal issues necessitated the change (e.g. my husband's job was transferred to NYC so now I'm looking for a job in NYC as well).
3) "Why should we hire you?" -- Know your strengths and don't be afraid to state them in a confident manner. You should be able to contribute to the company through your strengths. Be able to pick 2 or 3 at most -- it's better to have quality than quantity here. To stick with the art museum example, you could focus on your expertise in a particular area of art, your connections in local art galleries, and/or your passion that will drive you to work nights and weekends on a challenging project.

I would like to work for your company because I think I could prove myself to be an asset in your business, and would appreciate the opportunity to grow
I wish to leave my current job/position because I see no long term future there, and desire the opportunity to learn and promote within a company
I believe you should hire me because I have the integrity and ability to do the job well. I'm hard-working, honest and willing to learn |

1. I always look for ways to better myself in both my career, and my personal life. I think my employment at this firm/company would be beneficial to me as well as you, as I am well qualified for this position.

In order to give you a good answer, I would need to know a little more about the company and position you are seeking and what kind of job you would be leaving. Are you interested in a career or just a job?
Don't talk bad about the company you are leaving or the people there. You need positive reasons for making the change. |

I feel that I can contribute my knowledge and hard work toward the betterment of this organization. I need to move forward in my life and I have grown stagnant in my present work place. My current position does not allow for further advancement. I would hope that you would give me the chance to prove my worth to you, and allow me help in the future of this organization. Thank you and have a nice day. |
