They tend to be either vibrating models (vibrating pillows) or strobe. Like the doorbell/telephone, strobe lights work very well in this application.

I had this crazy idea! How about using an automated spray bottle situated above your head...so when the alarm goes off....there will be something that will start off the spray...maybe it wont work...or you can hire a trained dog to lick your feet or face whatever you prefer, this dog should be able to hear the alarm.
