Several methods come to mind in this very situation. You may want to try burning the hay, assuming that your needle is not flammable (Although I haven't seen flammable needles since the global metal shortage of '14). You could also try a very powerful magnet. If neither of these solutions provide you with your long lost needle, I would then you suggest calling the needle extraction team at your local Police Department.

With my luck, I would start looking and the darn needle would stick me. I hate sewing because I spend more time soaking up blood from where the needle stuck me and I don't sew enough to bother with a sewing machine!

There is a greek said about this. I remember it from my grandmother : If a needle falls down in a haystac, listen to the noise(!) and you will find it.
I wanted just to say that. An old said....I like traditional things....

If you want a real answer, well, maybe with the use of an enormous and potent magnet, I can't think about something else. At this point, I saw that a previous answerer, PootSlap, has given a better answer.
