Give Me Best Answer. Pleeeese!
I've got this piece of paper from the Bank of England that says "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the...
... sum of twenty pounds"

It's got a picture of the queen on it, plus some bloke with a wig. It's signed by an Andrew Bailey who I guess works behind the counter there.
As it happens I'm in the City tomorrow and I'll pop into the bank and see if Mr Bailey is there, and find out what this "twenty pounds" is. What could it be? I'll have to bring a bag if, as I suspect, it weighs that amount, but I thought this country was supposed to have gone metric?
What do you think Mr Bailey will have for me?
Additional Details
Hey is is actually a serious question as well. If I went up to the door of the bank and spoke to those doormen with the top hats and asked them to give me twenty pounds for my piece of paper then apart from "oh not another one - sigh" what would they say?

Yeah,........ I get them all the time. I just swap them for food, fuel and clothes etc. Then the people I did swapsies with, end up giving me lots of little round bits of metal -- as if the the goods weren't heavy enough, the rotten swines dump all their scrap metal onto me as well!!

A few words i think, and not polite ones

Fluke
Sorry but I don't think Andy Bailey will be available to see you. I'm sorry.

You should be given its value in gold. All our money is backed by gold, the paper is not worth anything but represents its value in gold that is kept in varios places around the world...Although i don't think they will actually give it to you sorry!

LoL Someone on his behalf will say: you didn't pay enough in your life so you have to work and loose 20 pounds per week (in money or weight) ... Just turn to the pub. Better return ;)

I remember those. You used to be able to exchange or barter them for goods or services back in the old days, along with something called a 'cheque' which is a piece of paper with your signature on instead of Mr Bailey's.

davetumalty
Mr Bailey is the governor of the bank of England.

Under English law Notes such as in £5, £10, £20, & £50 and yes £1000 note (only used for transactions between banks) are not actually money they are "Negotiable Bonds" notes are manufactured by the bank of England whilst money is issued by the royal mint.

With referance to "sunshine above" our money is not backed by gold, its backed by commodities gold only makes up 5% of our capital reserve

Legally only coins are Money in England so they will give you 20 £1 coins
